PAVIA. “Let’s build together a Europe of peace, work and social justice.” This is the slogan chosen by Cgil, Cisl, Uil to celebrate May Day 2024. Cgil Pavia, Cisl Pavia Lodi and Uil Pavia will celebrate Workers’ Day in the Scala district, at the Cesare Volta theater in Piazzale Salvo D’Acquisto, in Pavia .
The event will start at 3pm and end at 11pm and will include debate, music and street food. Entrance will be free.
The musical program of the day includes performances by the group Bataquaerch, the duet Pezzi da 90 composed by the Callegari brothers, Tusco and DJ Ghost, the band Corte dei Miracoli, Di Antonio Carta and Vibe. Therefore a quite varied musical proposal, ranging from the compositions of the classic Seventies singer-songwriters to decidedly more rock pieces without forgetting the folk linked to popular traditions.
The relocation to the Cesare Volta theater, for a certain period of time, was not a given. At the beginning, in fact, the Municipality of Pavia had not granted anyone the use of the Volta theatre: not to CGIL, CISL and UIL to celebrate Workers’ Day, nor to Arci for the screening of a documentary against intensive farming. and the related funding that comes from Europe.
Then, after the “no” to the unions had been taken up by the main national newspapers and after a meeting between the mayor, Fabrizio Fracassi and the exponents of the three unions, the Municipality had gone back on its decision, granting the use of the structure which was located in the Scala district. Subsequently, with a second U-turn, Mezzabarba also gave the OK to an event organized by Arci and scheduled for April 21st: the screening of a documentary film on the exploitation of animals for human consumption. Regarding the event to be organized on the occasion of Labor Day, the mayor Fabrizio Fracassi had clarified: «The regulation provides that the structure will only be used for cultural events or shows for children and families». «Sometimes it would be enough to delve a little deeper, avoiding exploitation; it would perhaps be enough to ask which municipal locations may be suitable for the purposes of the event you want to organize or simply make a phone call. No “political” denial as has already been expressed. The administration has always been fully available for events that concern the city.”
For these reasons, the Municipality had changed its mind compared to the initial refusal and had granted the structure in Piazzale Salvo D’Acquisto. In the past, May Day concerts had been organized and held in Piazza della Vittoria.
During the day at the Volta theatre, however, there will not be space exclusively for music. The program also includes interventions on topics relating to the world of work, first of all the plague of unrelated deaths. We will probably also return to discussing a project carried out by the Democratic Party which provides for a minimum wage of 9 euros an hour to prevent work from being confused with exploitation at the expense of workers’ dignity.
