May Day, the program of the day in Luco dei Marsi

LUCO DEI MARSI – “Let’s build together a Europe of Peace, Work, Social Justice”. This is the theme chosen this year by the trade union confederations, which will characterize the initiatives for the May 1st celebration throughout Italy.

The Committee for the Luco dei Marsi May 1st Festival, in agreement with the CGIL and the SPI-Cgil, meets in Piazza Umberto 1° at 10.30 am.

They will be present:

Camillo Cherubini, President of the Committee that will open the event

Michele Fina, senator of the Republic

Marilia Di Paolo, provincial coordinator of SPI-Cgil women

Luciano D’Amico, regional councilor of the “Pact for Abruzzo”

Francesco Marrelli, Secretary of the Chamber of Labor of the province of L’Aquila,

Umberto Trasatti, provincial secretary of Spi-Cgil.

In Luco dei Marsi the 1st May celebration has been celebrated – except for the interruption between 1923 and 1945 – since 1905, the date of the establishment of the “League of Workers of the Land of Luco” organized by the league leader Rocco Amadoro, and is linked to the long history of battles for work and for the emancipation of the working classes of our country.

In 1913 the Workers’ League of Lucca, with around 1000 members, joined the Chamber of Labor of Rome. In the meantime, the peasant movement with Rocco Amadoro also organized itself politically in the PSI and in 1914 conquered the Municipality. With the advent of fascism in 1923 the festival was suppressed by the regime. The 1st of May, in Luco, has returned to being a great popular festival since 1945 and the town also once again becomes the most important reality of the Marsican left.

In 1950 Luco dei Marsi was the advanced leader in the organization of the Reverse Strike against Prince Torlonia and in the organization of the struggles for land which ended victoriously with the agrarian reform. The struggles for work and land also positively marked the economic and political history of the municipality and of Marsica in the following years.

Over the years in Luco, national and regional political figures, representatives of the institutions and the union have taken turns on the stage of May 1st, to mark the various passages in the political history of Italy, our region and Marsica.
