A flash mob against the shortcomings of the Mazara hospital

“A Ferrari without an engine” is the image of the ‘Abele Ajello’ hospital in Mazara del Vallo that Nicolò Di Giovanni wanted to leave to the media present during the ‘flash mob’ – organized by the ‘Pro Abele Ajello’ citizen committee – to give a better idea of the conditions in which, even today, the Mazara hospital finds itself.

“I am noticing – declared the president of the Citizen Committee to the microphones of Televallo – that people are finally participating: they have realized that without the commitment of citizens this hospital is at high risk because it is politics that decides and Mazara is not well represented. We are witnessing more and more – continued Di Giovanni, former head of the cardiology department of the ‘Abele Ajello’ hospital in Mazara, now retired – a impoverishment of the hospital: more departments are suffering, those that left when had to renovate the hospital, some departments have deliberately not returned, they are still deliberately not reactivated, such as resuscitation, and all this means that the Mazara hospital is a level I DEA only on paper, and the people of Mazara must no longer tolerate this and must intervene” .
As expected, on the evening of April 23rd, this FLASH MOB organized by the PRO ABELE AJELLO CITY COMMITTEE took place in front of the hospital and recorded a large and warm participation. At the end of the interventions, as scheduled, the citizens present turned on the flashlights of their cell phones to signify that the Mazara Hospital needs light and clarity to be shed on its role as 1st LEVEL DEA and not be the object of plots dark forces systematically aimed at weakening him.

Already in recent months the Mazara section of the Court of Patient Rights (TdM) had also wanted to “highlight the unresolved critical issues concerning the Abele Ajello hospital”. And he made it known through a statement, sent to the local media, to remind those who have the power to make decisions in this regard not to continue joking at the expense of citizens.

THE DEPARTMENTS STOPPED – Another note that continues to be out of place is the one relating to the phantom wards: once they were there, they should have returned at the end of the renovation of the hospital but, to this day, they are still absent. “The ophthalmology, pneumology and psychiatry departments” which for years had been “diverted to other hospitals, before the restructuring of the Abele Ajello, have not returned to their home” underline the volunteers of the Mazarese TdM.

“VERY POOR HEALTH OFFER” – “It seems clear – continued the note signed by the TdM coordinator, Natale Russo, last March – that the absence of what has been described leads to a very poor healthcare offer for citizens, even with serious pathologies, who have the right to the necessary care” .

REPORTS REPEATEDLY IGNORED – “The aforementioned reports – continued the press note – are repeatedly addressed by the TdM who continuously and formally reports them to the competent authorities. In fact, with regret, it is noted that to date not even the most urgent problems have been resolved and it is not possible to accept the bureaucratic reasons that enormously slow down immediate solutions. We always trust – concluded Natale Russo – in the good will of the relevant authorities”.

THE AIMS OF THE ‘PRO ABELE AJELLO’ COMMITTEE – The group of volunteers was created with a dual purpose: 1) to inform and mobilize all the citizens of Mazara, who until now have been deliberately kept in the dark, of the real conditions in which the hospital finds themselves to become aware and actively participate in its efficiency, rather than complain uselessly and inconclusively in times of need; 2) prevent the hospital, completely renovated with approximately 40 million euros and certainly among the most modern and efficient in the whole of Sicily, rightly classified DEA level 1, from being weakened instead of being equipped with indispensable equipment and departments without which this classification would only remain on paper.

RESUSCITATION ABSOLUTE PRIORITY – “But the first and most important structure to be activated – the president of the Committee, Nicolò Di Giovanni, has always underlined – is the Resuscitation Department because: it is foreseen by the Company Act (of the Asp of Trapani ed.); there are already suitable equipment and premises; there are the skills and the will; we can no longer be satisfied with insurance that has been systematically disregarded for years, with funding that appears and disappears, while patients – who require intensive resuscitation therapy, due to the chronic shortage of beds in the province – are sent to die outside the province in solitude and with serious repercussions on family members.”
