Cesena The victory of the twelfth man

The most beautiful things are almost never the easiest. In this spirit, by saying that being a Cesena fan is wonderful, everything has already been said. In fact, supporting Cavalluccio’s cause, apart from recent times, has been anything but simple. There was a lot of suffering, indeed, starting from July 2018, when the company went bankrupt, first of all creating very strong uncertainties about the very rebirth of the black and white colors of Romagna. It wasn’t easy to start again from D and neither was it easy to metabolize a series of very bitter pills that came in a burst of arm in arm with all the C playoff participations, which systematically ended without a happy ending.

This year, fortunately, the playoffs were not needed and in fact there were very few problems during the season. On the pitch, the only one that deserves to be mentioned is the initial misstep on Olbia’s pitch, in the championship opener. It was still summer, it seems like a lifetime ago. It was approached with the spirit that distinguishes our habits and which tells of a handful of loyalists ready to put together a terrible combination of planes and buses that lasted hours, missed sleep and worn out throats.

For Cesena this and more, even at the end of the world, other than in Sardinia. From where, moreover, the team has just returned for the second time after the trip to Sassari against Torres which in the initial tables could perhaps have been decisive and which instead the Bianconeri approached with a 19 point advantage and just two matches still to go dispute. There were derbies with Rimini, at home and away, those were great fun accompanied by a shower of goals.

And to say that after the trip taken by the red and whites in the Italian Cup there was already someone on the Riviera who was anticipating the beginning of the crumbling of the certainties of Mr. Toscano’s team. Sorry for him, he saw badly.

While the team was winning and convincing, the main problem thus became that of having the possibility of attending the matches live, an option that was anything but obvious, given the category, the capacities of the stadiums, the choices of other clubs and, certainly not for lastly, the decisions taken in matters of public order.

Remaining on the derby in Rimini, the tickets for the away match evaporated in just a few minutes, leaving many with dry mouths and a strong bitter taste in their mouths, so much so that in Pesaro in the following weeks the ultras groups, in protest towards the few tickets available, decided to do not enter.

They didn’t even enter at the time of the home match against Pontedera, even if in that case the reason was to be found in the throwing of the paper bombs that had exploded in Pescara, thrown from the Romagna sector, close to two stewards. As a consequence, the match on 20 January (won 4-0) was played with the Curva Mare closed. So no show? Not a chance. The organized fans met outside the gates, to still support the team even without being able to access the facility, singing and enjoying poker from their mobile phone screens.

Nothing to do even on February 3, when the victory against Fermana came in the silence of a stadium behind closed doors, due to the disqualification following the invasion of the pitch by Cristian Shpendi’s father. The ultras, to protest against the ‘fan card’, did not even enter Ferrara against Spal. It was a real shame. Because these are not the messages a city needs and because having to give up enjoying a live show for those who had been waiting for these moments for years was a mockery. Even if, as the weeks went by, there were opportunities to feast our eyes, sure enough. Until the apotheosis against Pescara, the party finally celebrated at home and the awareness of having separated an abyss from everything and everyone. So being a Cesena fan is not easy, even when you always win. But this year was truly beautiful.
