We have not yet reached the levels of Pescara, the Italian city in which the heaviest and noisiest price increases were recorded. But the provinces of Udine and Pordenone are in any case positioned above the Italian average. And for citizens this time it is not good news. The cup of coffeeIndeed, it becomes more and more expensive. Both at the bar counter and at the table, therefore with service included. The estimate was grounded by Assoutenti, who compared the average cost recorded in 2021 with that which instead characterizes this first part of 2024.

Well, both in Pordenone and Udine there were increases: in fact we are talking about a range ranging from 15 to 16 percent in a few months.

What happens in the bars downtown

The cafe in the centre in Pordenone and in the high society of Udine he is decisively aiming for odds of one euro and fifty. “We’ll get there within the year”, swears most bartenders, citing the increases recorded at the source as the reason behind the policy based on increases. We are therefore talking about raw materials that come from far away. The data from which Assoutenti’s investigation arose are those cataloged by the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy.

How much does a cup of coffee cost

We start from Trieste, the regional capital. In the city of coffee par excellence in Friuli Venezia Giulia, the price of the cup increased by 12.3 percent. It started from the euro and 18 cents on average for the year that marked the end of the pandemic and reached one euro and 28 cents in the first months of this year. The increases in Udine and Pordenone are even greater. In the case of the Friulian capital, for example, the jump was 14.5 percent, in line with the country’s average. Above this level, however, is the trend in cup prices in Pordenone and its province, where it is close to +16 percent in the first months of the current year, again compared to the 2021 figure. Now the average prices it is around one euro and 35 cents, with several public establishments having already reached one euro and forty cents.

The picture: the record of expensive coffee in Bolzano

Espresso coffee has already undergone continuous price increases in recent years, to the point that today the average price of a cup consumed at a bar stands at 1.18 euros in the main Italian cities – explains Assoutenti – Just 3 years ago, in 2021, the average cost of espresso was 1.03 euros: this means that Italians have already suffered a 14.9% increase for what is an indispensable daily tradition for millions of citizens. Among the major cities, Bolzano is the one that holds the record for expensive coffee at the barwith an average price of 1.38 euros per cup, followed by Trento (1.31 euros) while Catanzaro, with an average of 0.99 euros, is the cheapest city, thus even surpassing Naples (1.05 euros) – analyzes Assoutenti – However, if we compare today’s price lists with those in force in 2021, we discover that the province that has suffered the greatest price increases is Pescara, with the average price rising from 1 euro to 1.28 euros and an increase in +28%, followed by Bari with +24.4%.

The worry

«We fear that the increases in coffee prices could lead to price increases in the coming weeks both for drinks at bars (coffee, cappuccino, etc.) and for powdered coffee sold in supermarkets – states the president Gabriele Melluso – Even a few cents of increase would cause a blow to consumers’ pockets, considering that in Italy around 6 billion coffees are served in public places per year for an espresso turnover of around 7 billion euros per year”.
