“Making the heartbeat of the unborn child heard by a woman who is going to have an abortion is certainly not a way to help difficult maternities”. This was reported by the Minister for the Family Eugenia Roccella, interviewed on the sidelines of the Fdi programmatic conference underway in Pescara , commenting on the news of some reports received by the Center against violence in Aosta from women forced to listen to the fetal heartbeat in public health centers where they had gone to access voluntary termination of pregnancy.
Roccella: “Volunteers have nothing to do with it”
“It is something that should not be done, but it was certainly not a volunteer who did this because to make the heartbeat feel you need an ultrasound and a gynaecologist, so it is a practice that has evidently been of some importance gynecologist and therefore it is right that in case this bad medical practice emerges in the press”, he added.
The complaint from the Women’s Center against Violence in Aosta
The Women’s Center against Violence in Aosta reported in a note that it had received reports from women “who, having arrived at public health facilities in the regional territory to access voluntary termination of pregnancy, were subjected to undue interference in the same places and pressure from volunteers, consisting of requiring them to listen to the fetal heartbeat or promising financial support or consumer goods, with the specific intent of dissuading them from the very personal and often painful choice to have an abortion”. “The Women’s Centre, in synergy with the anti-violence centers belonging to the Di.Re national network – Women in the network against violence – continues the communication also spread on social channels – will therefore start monitoring actions for the correct application of law 194/1978 in the territory regional, and awareness and resistance actions, supporting women and evaluating with them, if the conditions apply and in compliance with their will, any useful initiative to protect them”.
