THE EAGLE. Hundreds of enthusiasts also crowded record shops in Abruzzo on the occasion of the 2024 edition of Record store day, last April 20th. An initiative, celebrated worldwide, in defense not only of independent music but also of small shops, true temples for lovers of vinyl, CDs and sector culture.
Record Store Day was born in 2007 with the aim of promoting and supporting independent record stores in an era where online sales and digitalisation have threatened their existence.
In Abruzzo, based on the map drawn by the international website of the initiative, this year – among others – the Piatti and Picture Disc shops of Pescara, Musica e Libri of Lanciano (Chieti), Zeder of Martinsicuro (Teramo), House of the Disc Baron of Vasto (Chieti). Several others have welcomed this initiative.
«On every Record store day», explains Giuliano Cervelli, owner of Polarville in L’Aquila, «we manage to offer our customers a vast selection of exclusive and limited products, often unreleased recordings, alternative versions or rare material from the artists’ archives. These products are only available on the day of the event.”
Thus record shops become meeting places for the local music community, where they can exchange opinions, meet new people and, above all, discover new sounds. On display is a selection of the almost 400 vinyls released on the occasion of Rsd 2024, including a new edition of Atomic City of U2, but also You made me the thief of your heart by Sinéad O’Connor, written by Bono and Gavin Friday for the film’s soundtrack In the name of the father. So, Pearl Jam’s latest work, Dark matter (available in Italy in three versions), as well as an EP by Ringo Starr (Crooked boy) produced by Linda Perry with Nick Valensi of the Strokes on guitar, as well as an 80s live performance by the Charlie Watts Orchestra and picture discs of George Harrison’s Wonderwall Music and Electronic Sound.
