Viareggio, the Democratic Party deserts the celebration of April 25th

Clash in Viareggio (Lucca) between the mayor of Viareggio Giorgio Del Ghingaro and the Democratic Party on Liberation Day. The Dem city councilors, in fact, did not participate in the initiative which was held on April 25th.

“The Democratic Party of Viareggio is different”, the mayor of the Tuscan town joked yesterday on social media, referring to the choice of the three councilors who, in 2022, two years after his electoral victory, went to the opposition. Del Ghingaro, after recalling the visit of President Sergio Mattarella to Civitella Val di Chiana and the price paid by Viareggio and Versilia during the Second World War, expresses his disappointment at the absence of the League, the FdI but above all the PD: “Those councilors on Thursday, with their absence, made a noise because they betrayed the memory. A memory that is collective but of which the Democratic Party, more than others, professes to be the heir and witness.” And, as La Nazione reports, the base of the local Democrats literally rose up against those empty benches and those who were absent. At Del Ghingaro, who was elected for the first time in 2015 without the support of the local Democratic Party, the city councilors probably cannot forgive the fact that, on the occasion of the 2022 Lucca municipal elections, he gave his support to the centre-right candidate (later elected mayor) Mario Pardini. The former allies have been at loggerheads ever since.

“The mayor continues to mystify reality to create a case on an important day like that of 25 April“, write the three councilors of the Democratic Party, accusing Del Ghingaro “of defaming those who don’t think like him”. The people of Piddini complain that they received the invitation to attend the mayor’s initiative only the day before and explain that they celebrated April 25th differently. This is the thesis supported in a long letter published in the Quotidiano Nazionale and signed by the Tuscan deputy Marco Furfaro, Filippo Ciucci, secretary of the Democratic Party of Viareggio and by Dario Rossi, leader of the Democratic Party of Viareggio. In the long letter, the three Democratic representatives essentially explain that April 25 is everyone’s holiday, not to be exploited as the mayor did and that it can be celebrated anywhere, not necessarily in the city council.

Receiving accusations on the topic of memory and anti-fascism from those who only knew how to divide and sow hatred is truly bizarre and would be ridiculous if it weren’t politically incorrect“, conclude the three councilors.
