In a week and a half, at least a dozen premises have been stormed in Borgo Venezia in Verona, as well as that of Zia Elena in via XX Settembre in Veronetta. In all cases the modes of action are quite similar. A person with a covered face patrols the attack zone between 3 and 5 in the morning. After making sure no one is nearby, she uses a manhole cover or a large stone block or concrete to break the glass of the access door. Thanks to this procedure, in some cases the thief manages to enter the room, take the cash and escape with the loot, other times he escapes empty-handed.
The blitz of April 25th
The last blitz dates back to April 25th at the Eleven Café in piazza Nogarola, on the corner with via Pisano, where the trolleybus construction site has been active for about ten days. «I managed to report the incident only yesterday morning in the barracks – say the owners Mirko Carlotto and Roberta Mascalzoni -. From the cameras we see a person, around 3.30 in the morning, move one of the construction site barriers to open an escape route. After checking that no one was coming from viale Spolverini and via Cesari he took a concrete block and started banging it against the glass for 5 minutes. Luckily she didn’t manage to break it, she just ruined the frame. As soon as the alarm sounded she ran away. Since the works began, patrols have not been able to easily access our area and someone is taking advantage of this.”
The other episodes
Other similar episodes have occurred in recent days in Piazza Nogarola where the thief on duty completely smashed the glass of the Zattoni butcher’s shop and that of the Salon Marrakech Verona in via Cignaroli. The same fate happened last week also at the Rossini pastry shop in Piazza Libero, where the glass of their front door was smashed with a manhole cover. «From the cameras we saw a hooded person, with his face covered, tall and slender, arriving on a bicycle and sneaking into our place. He took away the cash drawer with 450 euros inside – explains Giorgio Ferrari, the owner’s father -. My son reported the incident to the police. However, I suspect that behind it these thefts are not carried out by a single person but by a gang.” In fact, the Borgo Venezia neighborhood is not the only one to have been attacked and even the thief, according to the shopkeepers’ stories, doesn’t seem the same.
