European elections, only the announcement of Meloni as a candidate is missing. Tomorrow is Giorgia-day

The political core of Fratelli d’Italia’s three-day program will be tomorrow, when Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will speak and lift her reservation on her candidacy for the European elections. Yes now seems to be the most accredited hypothesis, but the wait is still there, as is the heart of the journalistic story. “There will be an answer by May 1st,” says Giovanni Donzelli, deputy and top-level leader of Fratelli d’Italia, speaking at Agorà. On the sidelines of the Abruzzo event, the Minister of Agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida explains: «Giorgia Meloni is the leader of our party as well as the first woman who managed to allow our nation to modernize, demonstrating its value. Having a woman, I hope, like her at the helm of our list throughout Italy will also allow us to confirm the great trust that Italians have in her.”

The possible yes to the race contains a certain number of meanings. There is certainly the most immediate theme, the glance, that is, the political, electoral comparison, impact on public opinion with Elly Schlein, the secretary of the Democratic Party who a few days ago took the painful decision (not shared by all his party) to run. A dualism that could reach its climax in a televised face-to-face whose development has been hovering for months. Then there is the “test” of consensus after almost two years of government, and many things in between. Two very difficult economic maneuvers, also in light of the legacy received (translate: Superbonus) and the ECB’s choices on interest rates which have greatly restricted the margins for maneuver of our economic policy. An equally complex foreign policy framework, with internal reverberations on the maintenance of public order which has seen antagonism rear its head under the pretext of the worsening of the Middle Eastern crisis. In all of this, up to this moment the consensus of the Brothers of Italy has not suffered any significant shocks, the majority, beyond some physiological asperities, always finds a synthesis on the fundamental points and there is no crack in the hold.

In this journey, a series of victories achieved by the center-right in the territory are added, and only the Sardinian stumble, in this year and a half, has prevented the coat of arms by eight to zero in the regions. The result of the European elections will serve to consolidate all this and open up the game for the community majority that will come. Giorgia Meloni is leader of the conservative family, which could be decisive in the next balance. According to the polls, it will be the EPP (which in our country sees Forza Italia as the main point of reference) that will probably have the ignition key to start the round of appointments (i.e. it will have the first and last word on the President of the Commission) but the dialogue with some conservative forces (in the other right-wing group, Identity and Democracy, the only party potentially in dialogue would be the League but to date there has been no thawing) could prove fundamental for marginalizing the socialists. In recent months, Giorgia Meloni’s collaboration with Ursula von der Leyen has opened up a dynamic of this type. But it’s all still premature. It is a question of “the day after tomorrow”. While waiting for tomorrow, in Pescara we are counting the numbers of the event: 135 speakers on the various panels, 2200 delegates, 150 National Youth volunteers. A commitment to close ranks.
