Regional councilor Amalia Bruni (Pd): “It goes against the principle of the secular nature of the public health service”

Press release

“The amendment approved by the Senate opens the door to the inclusion of anti-abortion associations in clinics, against the principle of the secular nature of the public health service. The provision goes against Law 194, and therefore against the autonomy and freedom of women.

An information and awareness campaign is necessary aimed at an incisive mobilization, capable of blocking the way to this massacre, in violation of women’s rights and their self-determination”. This is what he says the regional councilor of the Democratic Party, Amalia Bruni, vice president of the Health commission.

“The amendment, which sees Lorenzo Malagola of Fratelli d’Italia as the first signatory, provides that the Regions, in organizing the services of the consultancies, can also avail themselves, without new or greater burdens on public finances, of the involvement of Third sector subjects who have qualified experience in maternity support – explains the Democratic regional councilor -. The consequences that all this could have on women’s right to access services that concern the protection of their physical and mental health are evident. Women who choose to voluntarily terminate a pregnancy have the right to be able to count only and only on professionals and consultant professionalstrained to accompany them in their free choice, whatever it may be, in a free way and not influenced by ideological positions.

The disturbing presence of anti-abortion associations would create a potentially hostile environment for those seeking medical assistance at such a delicate moment in their lives. Counseling centers should be safe and welcoming places, where women can feel free to express their needs and receive assistance without being judged or influenced by personal beliefs.”

“This law, if promulgated by the President of the Republic, would represent a serious step backwards for women’s rights in Italy. It is essential that the public health service remains neutral and secular, guaranteeing all women access to high quality health services, without discrimination or ideological constraints”, concludes Bruni.
