Spinal pathologies are widespread among adults and often underestimated. Of the 80% of these pathologies, degenerative ones, such as herniated discs and disc protrusions, disc disease and spinal stenosis, are the most common. A herniated disc, in particular, is characterized by the leakage of a part of the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral disc, causing pain and weakness.

An important therapeutic weapon is PLDD, Percutaneous Laser Disc Decompression, a minimally invasive treatment for herniated discs and disc protrusions. Conceived by Dr. Daniel SJ Choy in 1986 and approved by the American FDA in 1991, the method was introduced (first in Italy and second in Europe) in December 2002 by Dr. Gian Paolo Tassi, neurosurgeon specialist, the only one authorized by Prof. Choy to perform PLDD in Italy, at the Casa di Cura Quisisana Accredited Private Hospital in Ferrara.

The operation, which lasts 30 to 50 minutes with local anesthesia in specific points of the lumbar area, uses a thin needle and a very thin laser optical fiber to reduce the pressure of the hernia on the compressed nerve and relieve pain, avoiding cuts to the skin or muscles and/or removals of ligaments or bone. The hospitalization of only 2-4 hours, the convalescence of approximately 15 days and the more timely return to work compared to the traditional operation, in approximately 15-30 days, represent further advantages, which make PLDD a very safe and effective technique in ‘87% of cases.

Today it is possible to undergo the PLDD procedure at the Casa di Cura Quisisana Accredited Private Hospital in Ferrara. With positive results in 87% of cases out of over 4500 interventions, PLDD offers an effective minimally invasive solution to improve the quality of life of users suffering from degenerative vertebral pathologies such as in selected cases of herniated discs and protrusions.
