European photography traveling among clouds, rivers and mountains

Reggio Emilia, 26 April 2024 – Nature mother and stepmother nature. Human being part of nature and more than that. Nature that hides her knowledge, but can also manifest power in a destructive way. European Photography 2024 – with the title “Nature loves to hide” – starting from a context that is that of the Anthropocene, it explores life on earth and addresses the issues of sustainability through the lens of the artists chosen for this nineteenth edition by the curators Tim Clark, Walter Guadagnini and Luce Lebart.

Today they were the exhibitions inaugurated of the official Circuit at Palazzo Magnani, Cloisters of San Pietro, Palazzo da Mosto, Villa Zironi, Palazzo dei Musei, Biblioteca Panizzi, Spazio Gerra, together with the Off Circuit. While tomorrow and the day after tomorrow the events and meetings that accompany the inaugural days. Starting with Photophony the musical version of the festival curated by Max Casacci (producer and founder of Subsonica), which this year has the title “Urban souls” and is dedicated to the history, present and future of an Italian music capable of blending black and soul roots, with the complexity of contemporary urban languages, through melody and words.

Tomorrow evening the stage is in Piazza San Prospero (starting at 9pm) for the DJ set by Venerus, which transforms the square into a colorful dance hall without space-time boundaries. The day after tomorrow instead – at 5pm Horsewoman – Mariasole Biancomarine biologist, will talk about the mysteries and astonishing curiosities of the great ocean on a carpet of natural sounds created by Max Casacci.

Among the appointments, tomorrow morning at 11 at the Cloisters of San Pietro, the poet Mariangela Gualtieri converses with Loredana Lipperini on the themes expressed by the exhibitions. The day after tomorrow (again at 11 at the Cloisters of San Pietro), Lipperini will speak with Marco Paolini around nature and words.

I am ten exhibitions hosted by the Cloisters of San Pietro. Among these, the exposition dal is striking for the liveliness of the colors contrasted with the drama of the subject Indian photographer Arko Dattowhich proposes three conceptually distinct ways of viewing the Bengal Delta, considered one of the epicenters of climate change.

Rising sea levels and sharply rising rivers have submerged many islands in the region, exposing millions of people to the risk of becoming climate refugees. On the ground floor, not to be missed is the exhibition which tells of the infinite mutability of clouds, in a collective exhibition entitled “Sky Album. 150 years of capturing clouds”. The exhibition celebrates the vastness and beauty of clouds and the uniqueness of the passionate practice – of scientists, amateurs and artists – of photographing the sky.

TO Palazzo da Mosto among others, the images commissioned by the company are on display artistic direction to Karim El Maktafi, collected under the title “day by day”. A look at the internal areas of our Apennines, which reveals its particular cultural heritage.

To the Museums there is space for the exhibition dedicated to the work Luigi Ghirri – “Passage zones”, which offers a reflection on the theme of darkness and night. The starting point are the numerous nocturnal works that Luigi Ghirri created during his production, alongside the work of various authors of international importance who, starting from the experiments on the medium and on visibility at the end of the 1960s, they use the darkness as a possibility for narration. The exhibition is also set in Palazzo dei Musei Young Italian Photography #11 whose artists participate in the 2024 Luigi Ghirri Prize.

Palazzo Magnani houses the monumental Susan Meiselas retrospective (1948 Baltimore, USA), who became known for her work in the conflict areas of Central America (between 1978 and 1983) and in particular for her powerful shots of the Nicaraguan revolution. The exhibition, entitled “Mediations”is the most complete retrospective ever presented in Europe and brings together a selection of works ranging from the Seventies to today.

Reopens then to Fotografia Europea Villa Zironi, a jewel of eclectic Liberty architecture, which like a precious treasure chest envelops Silvia Infranco’s exhibition – curated by Marina Dacci – entitled “Roots”. The fascinating objects on display are the result of research that the artist has done on herbals and pharmacopoeia. Information and entire program on Fotografiaeuropea.it
