April 25 Civitavecchia

Handshakes, hugs and requests to vote… the candidates were all present

Yesterday Civitavecchia, like all Italian municipalities, also celebrated the important Liberation Day in memory of the end of the period of fascist oppression.

An important day which, in the morning, saw various events organized around the city. Lots of participation, but above all lots of smiles… even from those who usually don’t even greet you.

April 25th effect? I would say that perhaps it is the electoral campaign effect now in full swing in Civitavecchia. All faithful to the motto “a handshake is not denied to anyone” we witnessed (… and experienced) the festival of falsehood.

On the other hand, many candidates for Mayor and many citizens on their lists create an incredible movement of more or less involved people and a morning among people is an excellent opportunity to get noticed.

This was the case at the Parco della Resistenza when the Mayor Ernesto Tedesco was scheduled to lay a wreath in front of the monument dedicated to the former internees at 10.30am.

Many red flags and handkerchiefs tied around the necks of those who have always demonstrated on this day of national interest, but who, in reality, disappeared when the mayor arrived, leaving a few close friends to applaud him.

Probably because the event was scheduled at the Monument to the Arditi del Popolo at the same time, where there was a really great participation.

But the municipal administration then moved in large numbers to the Marina where they were able to embrace the city in front of the Monument to Falcone and Borsellino. Here too, lots of participation, and the same handshakes.

In the general euphoria, under a beautiful spring sun, someone was heard shouting…. “Long live the former Mayor!” Nothing could be more true, but to some it seemed like a lack of respect towards the Civitavecchia lawyer Ernesto Tedesco (… born in Avellino, as he was keen to point out in a post on social media).

An important day for a historic event where the citizens of Civitavecchia appreciated the perfect organization of the event at the Marina with the band perfectly performing the national anthem and also an instrumental version of “Bella Ciao”.

A note of color…. or rather, tricolour. The white, red and green shoes of a City Councilor were much appreciated… worn with the same ease as she has changed her political coat over the years.

Probably an excellent ploy to be remembered, and when she asks for the vote she can say… I’m the one with the tricolor shoes.
