The mayor of Aosta spoke at the Liberation Day ceremony held in Aosta
«I swear to fight against fascism every day that is in me and that regurgitates, tries to rise up and take over by sowing.” Thus the mayor of Aosta, Gianni Nutiat the conclusion of the speech given at the ceremony for the 25 April in the presence of the regional authorities. A celebration for Liberation “from” and to “be free” of”, stated Nuti, addressing “us, children of 25 April 1945” and the Valle d’Aosta «autonomous because anti-fascist».
«Free from that fascism born in bloodthe one spread by the squadristi who smashed the skulls of political opponents, including that of Giacomo Matteotti, whose one hundredth anniversary of death will be on June 10th (let’s at least remember this…) – said the mayor -; free from that fascism extinguished in the fratricidal blood of civil war and a devastating world conflict. Free from those glasses that fascism had imposed on our fathers for twenty years and which, as in the dystopian world told in the White Bear – an episode of the television series Black Mirror – had transformed hypothetical, imaginary enemies into deformed, dangerous monsters and instigators of hatred: first the communist workers, then the old parliamentarians, then the Libyans, the Ethiopians, the sodomites, the subnormals, the Jews (let’s use the lexicon of the time)… sowing death to unite a people.”
The Liberation from fascism allowed «for write the rules of the democratic game together, and found the principles of a more human community than the one in the past.” Nuti again: «we are grateful for having allowed us, at least until today, to be free to express ourselvescivilly, in any way, free to seek the truth by any meansperhaps without fully finding it, but being able to try, also free to admit that haters gonna hate and that cruelty is in the human race and under certain conditions spreads everywhere. We still savor the freedom of today feeling like a people in our differencescolored like a rainbow, passionate about life, attentive to fragility, curious conqueror of new knowledge, prudent, but without fear of the new.”
The mayor of Aosta also underlined the need to pay attention to the other side of the regimes, not the violent one but “that culture that has filled the minds of lies and simplifications and he did live in the mutual suspicion, confusing a truth which, listen, exists and is incontrovertible and must be recognized and defended. It is that culture that has meant that there are no political positions of the right or left ready to debate in a civil democratic confrontation, but only the single position of a monolithic people: these are the roots of populism, a single one raw thought – for us Aosta Valley people also a single language”.
