The ports of Trapani. Let’s take stock of work in progress, projects and development processes

The ports of the cities of the province of Trapani experience different states, conditions and moments of their development. If that of Trapani maintains the scepter of the largest and most developed infrastructure in the territory, thanks to the action and interventions promoted by the Western Sicily Sea Port System Authority, that of Mazara also continues its development, with important innovations for the next tourist season.

Instead I am waiting, that of Marsala, the complete design and then the definition of the financing process and the tender for the works, while for the situation of the port of Castellammare and that of Bonagia, a seaside hamlet of Valderice, in recent weeks the Trapani regional deputy Dario Safina had intervened and in recent days he also presented a question to President Schifani and to Infrastructure Councilor Aricò.

Port of Trapani – The dredging work completed last October continues at the port of Trapani. The interventions to improve safety during access and mooring of ships concern the entrance and the entire entrance channel to the ferry, passenger and goods docking areas, and the central-eastern area, starting from the Ronciglio pier, the Sanità pier, up to the beginning of the hydrofoil terminal: with a depth of -11 and -10 metres. The work was awarded, for an amount of 67.5 million of the PNRR, by a RTI made up of RCM Costruzioni Srl, Società Italiana Dragaggi SpA and Tecnobuilding srl. The estimated 600 days for execution.

Port of Mazara – After many years of waiting, dredging works have also begun in Mazara this winter in the Canal Port which will improve the navigability of fishing boats and boats, while the works continue in the coming months, several ships will arrive in the most important fishing port in Italy cruise, thus definitively opening up to new tourist and economic scenarios, an infrastructure born and grown around fishing and which now aims to become in all respects a point of interest in the Sicilian cruise market. At the moment, 13 cruise ports are planned, which will bring thousands of tourists to the city. The Mazarese Port is preparing to have important outlets on a tourist level with its strategic position and be an opportunity for development for the local economy. The entrepreneur Gaspare Panfalone, president of Riccardo Sanges & CSrl, a company active for many years in the development and management of the cruise sector, expressed the utmost satisfaction with the positive feedback received from shipowners and is confident in a constant and continuous increase. Among the cruise ships that will stop in Mazara del Vallo in 2024 there are: the “Clio”, the “Corinthian” and the “Sh Diana” but there are several other cruise ships interested in including the Port among their itineraries of Mazara del Vallo.

Port of Marsala – While waiting for something possible to move entry into the Western Sicily System Port Authority hoped for by the engineer himself. Panfalone, which would allow the city and its infrastructure to be included in a port network and enjoy the benefits and investments that it can generate – Mayor Grillo spoke about it last November about wanting to activate all the request procedures to allow entry into the port of Marsala in the Port Authority, – the executive project should soon be delivered by the Temporary Group of Professionals (RTP), made up of the companies Modimar, Technital, Modimar Project, React and IG&P based in Rome. “The works for the design of the port have progressed and after the first design phase, we will now have to proceed with the executive project, which includes the evaluation of the technical-financial feasibility”, assured a few months ago the regional deputy and group leader at ‘Ars of Forza Italia Stefano Pellegrino, who said: “The sums necessary to start the definitive design have already been included in the Region’s budget and, once this phase is completed, the actual works can begin.”

Port of Castellammare – It is Safina himself who takes stock of the situation for both ports. “As regards the port of Castellammare – explains Safina – a tender for an integrated contract has been issued and the contract has been signed but the works have not yet started due to delays on the part of the awarded company. The estimated amount of the works, in fact, is around 10 million euros but in reality, from an analysis of the documents I conducted with the competent offices, it emerges that to complete all the necessary works, i.e. the completion of the last part of the groyne and the reinforcement of the sea defense of the part of the quay already restored, at least 15 million euros are needed”. For this reason Safina has urged the regional government to start the works and then to identify the further resources necessary in the area of the Development and Cohesion Funds, given the strategic importance of the structure.

Port of Bonagia – “The situation of the Port of Bonagia – says Safina – is particularly complex, not only because the 31 million expected expenditure will not be enough in light of the price update that will have to be carried out, but also because the 265 thousand euros foreseen by the article for the adaptation of the project and for the sector studies necessary for the EIA/SEA environmental assessment by the Ministry of the Environment, due to an inconceivable error they were not assigned to the department that had requested them and therefore they are not available in the budget. The risk, here too, is that due to all the accumulated delays, it will not be possible to access the development and cohesion funds, making every effort made so far for the construction of this important port project in vain”. In recent weeks, among other things, the Port of Bonagia has seen the intervention of mechanical means for the operations to restore the operation of the slipway, which had become impracticable due to the seagrass stranded in recent months.
