The mayor stated that “Fascism hasn’t existed for over 75 years” and that “the only ones who haven’t gotten over it are the communists”.

The celebrations of April 25th in Gallarate were characterized by an atmosphere of tension between the mayor Andrea Cassani and some exponents of the ANPI and the demonstrators present at the commemoration.

During his official speech, held at the end of the mass at the monumental cemetery, Cassani uttered some phrases that aroused protests from some citizens. In particular, he stated that “Fascism hasn’t existed for over 75 years” and that “the only ones who haven’t gotten over it are the communists”.

These words provoked boos and disapproving comments from some present, who accused the mayor of disrespecting the victims of fascism and of exploiting the anniversary for political purposes.

At the end of his speech, Cassani was approached by some protesters who challenged his attitude, reminding him of his duty to be everyone’s mayor, even those who did not vote for him.

Despite the tensions, the procession took place regularly, crossing the city and ending in Piazza Risorgimento.
