A Gold in MMA Light and a fourth place which narrowly missed out on a podium in grappling too. This is Marcello Mazzotto’s personal assessment in the third stage of the MMA Italy National Championships held in Turin.
The Versus athlete won the MMA match in his category, the – 69 KG by submission, finishing off his helpless opponent in less than 1 minute. A more tortuous path but technically very significant in grappling. Despite competing against opponents who were much more experienced than him (Marcello has only been practicing these sports since last November) Mazzotto still managed to reach the semi-final where he narrowly lost on points but came close, in the final seconds of the fight, to finishing with a leverage his opponent’s foot.
“It remains very bitter in the mouth – comments his teacher Guido Colombo – because the opponent seemed on the verge of giving up but he ran out of time. In addition to this, as already 2 weeks ago in Castelletto Ticino, our athlete also paid for some too much naivety in the management of the match which however should not be surprising given that, as I already stated after the last match, he really has very few months of practice behind him and this was only his second competition, the first of national caliber. There is therefore nothing to regret but rather to rejoice, we are truly convinced of his potential, he just needs time and he will be able to make his way if he wants it”.
