BOAR INVASION, COSPA ABRUZZO: EXTENDING THE DAYS OF HUNTING

The president of Cospa Abruzzo, Dino Rossi, raised important concerns regarding the effectiveness and management of hunting as a method of controlling the wild boar population. According to Rossi, hunted hunting represents the most effective way to reduce the population of these ungulates, but it is a temporary solution.

Rossi denounced that the selection hunt, open to all, does not always respect the protocol which involves targeting only the youngest ungulates. This behavior, often linked to the meat market, can lead to serious consequences, such as the indiscriminate killing of females and puppies, which in turn can attract predators such as wolves into population centers.

One of the main problems highlighted by Rossi is the short period allowed for stalk hunting, which limits the effectiveness of operations. If the times were extended, more significant results could be achieved and the damage caused to the community and farmers could be mitigated.

Furthermore, Rossi criticized selective hunting, defining it as a form of authorized poaching, as it does not respect the selection criteria of the target animals. This behavior, combined with the increasing frequency of wild boars in urban areas, has led to significant damage to local agriculture.

Finally, Rossi highlighted the financial challenges faced by regions in compensating for damage caused by wildlife, underlining the need for greater attention and resources to address the problem of wild boar overpopulation.

In summary, hunted hunting may represent a temporary solution for wild boar control, but more effective measures and prudent management are needed to sustainably address the problem of overpopulation of these ungulates in rural and urban areas. (DV)
