The PD councilors Antonella Russo, Felice Calabrò and Alessandro Russo presented a resolution to the city council to request the calling of a referendum to be submitted to the population with which the community must be called to express itself on the Bridge.

“How is it possible or conceivable that at a time when the country is discussing such an important work as the Strait Bridge, the local area is never listened to or questioned on the point?” This is the question that the three city councilors of the Democratic Party, Antonella Russo, Felice Calabrò and Alessandro Russo, ask the city and above all the city council through the press. This is what the PD municipal councilors have already asked for with a resolution which they submitted to the attention of their fellow councilors last week.

“Regardless of our position which is known – explained Calabrò -, we have a concern that we are trying to highlight in every forum, including in the bridge commission. Regardless of yes or no, the territory should be questioned with a referendum.” “This resolution is indicative, we ask the Administration to start the procedures for a referendum to be submitted to the citizens of Messina. These are public works with a huge impact on the community” underlined Alessandro Russo. It was also pointed out that the municipal statute provides in articles 9 and 10 the possibility of holding consultative referendums, i.e. which have no constraints on administrative action, but are important to understand what the city thinks.

“Messina must be able to express itself and so should Villa San Giovanni, i.e. the two municipalities that would be most affected by all this,” Russo reiterated. “How many times have we said that the bridge, whether it is built or not, passes over the heads of the citizens?” asks Antonella Russo: “The Democratic Party tried to include amendments in the public debate but they were rejected by the centre-right. But the decrees provide for the mandatory debate for works costing more than 500 million, let alone this one which costs 14 billion. I ask the question again: is it right that such an impactful work did not include a public debate? In our opinion, no. We ask the mayor and the city council to express their opinion.”
