There are testimonies that have the fundamental role of fixing history, preventing the truth from fading or worse from being watered down by propaganda which in the case of Russian propaganda is among the most unscrupulous and pervasive of this era.

The documentary “20 days in Mariupol” is precisely one of these: a reportage that immortalized the criminal destruction on video and conquest of the Ukrainian city of Mariupol to work of the invading Russian army. It is a film by the Ukrainian journalist Mstyslav Chernovwinner of the Pulitzer Prize and winner of the Oscar for best documentary, which will be screened in a event evening to the MIV multiplex in Varese on Monday 29 April at 8pm (TICKETS HERE)

“20 days in Mariupol” is a raw film and the result of the courage of those who shot it. It dates back to the eve of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, when a team of journalists entered the port city of Mariupol. During the subsequent siege, as bombs fell, residents fled and access to electricity, food and water was cut off. Reporters, the only ones left, struggled to report the atrocities of the war, until surrounded by Russian soldiers they took refuge in a hospital, trapped.

Their images, spread by the world media, document death and destruction, and refute Russian disinformation. Faced with so much pain, the Ukrainian director and journalist Mstyslav Chernov wondered if continuing to film could make any difference, but it was the citizens of Mariupol themselves who begged him to continue, so that the world could witness it.

From Father Volodymyr the invitation to come to the cinema

«I invite everyone to come and see this film – explains Father Volodymyr, a Catholic of the Byzantine rite, who takes care of the Ukrainian community of Varese, Gallarate and Meda -. Faced with what is happening in Ukraine, there is no need to convince anyone which side to take, you just need to see the reality to decide. This documentary illustrates it very well, it touches the heart. It makes us understand that in a situation like this we cannot be indifferent.”

During the evening, Father Volodymyr will speak with the director of Varesenews Marco Giovannelli.
