Cars parked on the roofs of two buildings. It may seem absurd, but this is what happens in the center of Messina: the bizarre scene attracted the curiosity of many people who wanted to share videos and photos on social media, wondering how all this was possible and above all if it was legal. The answer to this last question is yes. There is nothing illicit in the choice made by these two Sicilian condominiums, who have been letting their tenants park on the terrace for over 40 years. Messina has been grappling with the parking emergency for some time. La Gazzetta del Sud interviewed Salvatore Mondello, the city’s traffic councilor, who upon seeing the images of these two buildings spoke, smiling, of “creative parking”, adding that “everything is absolutely regular”.

Cars parked on the roof in Messina. How is it possible?

There is nothing mysterious.

On the other side of the building there is a goods lift: a solution studied forty years ago which however today, through social media, has sparked a lot of curiosity. The slab, the reinforced concrete slab that is the main structural element of a terrace, has been specially built and reinforced.

The parking spaces are numbered and regularly purchased through a notarial deed. A real convenience for the tenants of these two buildings. Who knows, maybe this story could be an inspiration for many other cities in which parking is becoming increasingly complicated.
