Rediscover photography as a tool for looking “beyond” what you see, so as to take “thoughtful” images, capable of offering a subjective and original interpretation of reality.

There’s time until Saturday 27 April 2024 to take part a THE ABSENCE (it is not the lack) the national photography competition promoted by the association FotograficaMente Siena in collaboration with the Municipality of Siena which is reserved for young people aged 14 to 35whose participation is absolutely free.

With this initiative now in its seventh edition, the association FotograficaMente Siena, which brings together photographers who have important artistic and professional paths to their credit, aims to offer an opportunity to those who use the photographic medium on a daily basis (especially thanks to frequenting social networks), to rethink photography as a fascinating and complex language which, in addition to documenting , investigating and telling, can be an opportunity for conceptual expression.

The invitation is to “experiment” the ability to look at what surrounds us in a personal way, capturing signs and symbols that redefine and interpret the relationship between what is real and what is not. The challenge is to represent life, environments, people, places “beyond” their realistic appearance: through the observation of everyday “subjects” it will thus be possible to discover a world of different meanings.

An experience that will lead participants to measure themselves with “conceptual photography” whose task is not to reproduce reality, but to explore its complexity, capturing, in the unexpected relationship between subjects and objects apparently distant from each other, surprising meanings that go beyond “that reality”. The newspaper will therefore be the starting point for the construction of an idea which will then lead to the creation of a shot capable of enclosing and evoking multiple meanings. And it is precisely on the interpretation of this relationship that the competition invites us to measure ourselves. To participate you don’t need to be an expert photographer, a camera is not essential, you just need to have something to say and a smartphone.

Each participant can send a maximum of three photographs exclusively in digital format which can be created with any technique and processing. The works (mandatory in JPG format with a minimum size of 1200 pixels on the long side) must be sent via wetransfer to the address: [email protected] by 11.59pm on 27 April 2024.

The complete regulation with all the instructions to follow can be consulted on: www.fotograficamentesiena.it.

In addition to the prizes for the first three classified, the competition will reserve special recognition for those who will develop the theme by proposing a diptych (i.e. a painting divided into two compartments that compares two distinct images or a polyptych (a work consisting of various relatively autonomous parts but in some connected mode).

The photographs will be evaluated by a jury composed of members of Photographically Siena: Gianfranco Bernardo, Andrea Lensini, Lucia Lungarella, Gigi Lusini, Luciano Valentini.

The winners, who will win material relating to photographic art, will be awarded on 21 May 2024 in the evocative location of the Cortile del Podestà of the Palazzo Comunale in Siena where, at the same time, an exhibition will be inaugurated with the winning works and those considered most interesting which will remain open to the public, with free admission, until 3 June 2024.

The awards ceremony will be opened by the “letio magistralis” of Stefano Tommasi, an unconventional photographer who began his path of artistic research in 2006. He then attended technical training courses in Milan and Florence and followed his experimentation in the field of conceptual photography. Winner of the second prize in the national competition “Premio Cascella 2012”, Tommasi exhibits his works throughout Italy. He is included in the Italian photographic self-portrait archive (MUSINF), together with famous names in Italian photography. In November 2019 he successfully exhibited the solo exhibition “I dreams of the mind” at the prestigious Pan Museum (Palazzo delle Arti Naples).

In December 2021 he exhibited the solo show “Giorni” at Castel dell’Ovo in Naples.
