Gender violence in Catania, a 22 year old arrested

CATANIA – Gender violence in Catania, where a 22-year-old threatened and beat his partner several times. The Carabinieri of the Radiomobile Unit intervened on the evening of Tuesday 23 April at the home of the girl, also 22 years old, and arrested the man after yet another episode of violence in which the woman was injured in the head.

The rescue of the Carabinieri

As stated in a statement from the Provincial Carabinieri Command, upon their arrival the soldiers found the victim with a noticeable bandage on his head. The woman had difficulty speaking due to severe pain on the side of her head, caused by the wound her ex-partner had given her the night before.

The girl told the Carabinieri that she had received, a few minutes before, yet another heavy telephone threat from her ex, who even announced that he wanted to cut the throat and head of her and her family. The woman decided at that moment to ask the military for help.

The woman said she lived with the 22-year-old convicted felon and that they then had problems with gender violence even after the end of their relationship. The man lived in the woman’s house even during the period in which she was under house arrest for drugs, and when he returned to his mother’s house he continued to harass his partner, controlling her social media and forcing her to share her location with him on the phone.

Aggression and gender violence

The desperate victim told the police that on Monday 22 April, in the late afternoon, he met the boy near the Catania cemetery for a last appointment. The 22-year-old forced the woman to get into her SUV by imposing a final meeting at her house, where he would also smoke her last cigarette and give her the last kiss.

However, the young man arrived on the first steps of his home he took a large scissors out of his pocket and attacked the woman, starting to frantically cut locks of her hair, before causing a deep wound on the front side of her head, at the temple.

The wound was bleeding profusely and at that point the 22-year-old, trying to run for cover, stopped a passing motorcyclist and ordered him to accompany the woman to the emergency room. In the hospital, doctors closed the woman’s head wound with 10 stitches.

The arrest

The Carabinieri, after having reassured the victim, they immediately tracked down and arrested the 22-year-old, already under house arrest, for the crime of family abuse and aggravated personal injury, operating in “deferred detention”. The man was made available to the Judicial Authority which, after validating the arrest, ordered him to be placed in precautionary custody in prison.
