While we are hit by dramatic winds of war on the borders of Europe, in the Middle East and in many other, sometimes ignored, scenarios of armed conflict, it is more appropriate than ever to recall April 25, 1945, when Italy freed itself from foreign occupiers , as well as fascism. It is appropriate to recall April 25 also in the face of an evident loss of quality of our democracy, threatened by a right-wing government which, through state television, does not hesitate to censor, for obvious political reasons, Antonio Scurati or sue an intellectual of his stature by Luciano Canfora, uses the truncheon too lightly and frequently against students and those who express dissent and attacks civil rights on a daily basis.

We want to invite young people above all to focus on the meaning that the date of April 25th has for the country. After twenty years of violent fascist dictatorship, Italy was exhausted. The last years had been spent at war. The Italian people had paid a high price in victims. This was the framework and context in which the tragic alliance that had seen Italy at war, together with Germany and Japan, was broken. Following the signing of the armistice, proclaimed on 8 September 1943, the Nazis occupied our national territory. Immediately, the best part of our country reacted by giving life to a resistance and national liberation movement. Among others, boys and girls who were not twenty years old participated; they gave up their innocence, their youth, their desire for life, to take up a weapon and go into combat. It was a bloody fight to expel the German invader and definitively defeat the fascists. It was a battle of freedom, in which communists, liberals, socialists, Catholics and even monarchists took part. Remembering those days and not losing your memory means keeping the anti-fascist roots and the fundamental principles on which our Republic and our democracy were born. We address a moving and grateful thought to all those who gave their lives and to whom we owe our freedoms and the conditions of peace and relative well-being in which we have had the good fortune of living.

April 25th is the holiday of all Italians, except those who want, in an anachronistic way, to refer to fascist ideology or to those who love to engage in historical revisionism, with the sole aim of emptying or diminishing the meaning of the Resistance.

April 25th is a holiday of peace, in the name of freedom and democracy. It is a day in which we must return to giving value to politics. To the good one. To that politics for which so many men and women have sacrificed their intelligence and their young lives.

With this spirit, the Civitavecchia PD Club will participate as every year in the celebrations of April 25th.
