«Radical change voted by majority in city councils without public debate»

“The race continues for the establishment of the New Province, Gateway to Italy. After Santa Marinella, which led the way and Fiumicino, Civitavecchia also approved by majority the establishment of the New Province Porta d’Italia on Monday 22 April.

Santa Marinella, Fiumicino and Civitavecchia. So to speak, because those who voted for such a radical change for the lives of those who live in these cities were not the citizens following an in-depth public debate, as common sense would have suggested, but the currently majority part of the City Councils emerged from past elections, where the issue was not even remotely present in the electoral proposals.

In reality, everything is happening not only in the absence of even minimal public debate, but also in a rush and in semi-deserted council chambers. Is there an ongoing competition for the positioning of political personnel in view of the upcoming elections in June?

In Civitavecchia, the proposal passed thanks to the favorable votes of the centre-right councilors who stated with strong conviction that the provincial capital could only be Civitavecchia given that the city has an ancient past history and has been awaiting emancipation from Rome for decades . The same belief that, with the capitals reversed, was declared in the City Council of Fiumicino, candidate for the position of pre-eminence for the greatest number of inhabitants.

The New Province “Gateway to Italy” has not yet been born and we can already foresee conflicts and arguments between the two aspiring capital cities. This clearly highlights the state of harmony and homogeneity of the territory which is declared to be the basis of the provincial entity to be established. But is all this useful to our territory?

As evidence of our firm opposition to the unrealistic and unfounded “Gateway to Italy” experiment, we – municipal councilors of various political forces of the municipalities in the area involved – explicitly reject the proposal of the new province”.
