Catanzaro, incorrect waste separation: checks and fines on commercial activities throughout the city
Descriptive text here

Controls and fines throughout the city for incorrect waste separation by production and commercial activities. The operation began at the first light of dawn, with the local police busy verifying compliance with the rules for the delivery of unsorted material on the usual Tuesday scheduled day. The checks followed the numerous reports, already notified by the environmental hygiene sector, against commercial establishments and today led to a total of 26 fines being raised for a total amount of approximately 10 thousand euros.

The operation was coordinated by the commander of the local police, Vincenzo Ruocco, and carried out by the entire teams of the environmental police unit, directed by lieutenant colonel Salvatore Tarantino, as part of the task force created with input from the mayor Nicola Fiorita. For several businesses fined, this is already the second infringement during the year which may be followed, in the case of a repeated offence, by the closure of the business for three days.

“The results of these checks have shown that the majority of private activities, already affected by warnings, continue not to differentiate correctly, generating double damage for the municipal administration”, comments Environment Councilor Giorgio Arcuri. “In fact, on the one hand, distributing waste in an indiscriminate manner on the day of collection of undifferentiated waste multiplies the costs borne by the organization for disposal. On the other hand, not correctly differentiating plastic, paper and glass as per the schedule penalizes the administration in terms of lost revenue. It is useful to reiterate that if everyone fully respected the rules, the percentage levels of waste separation could be increased and, consequently, a reduction in TARI costs could be achieved in the long term. The hope is, therefore, that citizens and operators will all do their part in waste disposal, safeguarding the quality of a service that has already seen Catanzaro stand out in a positive way over the years and on which we cannot afford to take steps backwards ”.

Please remember that on Tuesday materials such as sanitary pads, dirty rags, sponges, toothbrushes, rubber objects, disposable cutlery, cigarette butts, plasticized paper, shards of ceramic, porcelain and terracotta can be delivered. However, all separable and recyclable materials (organic, plastic and metals, paper, cardboard and glass) cannot be disposed of.
