Tari increase increasingly probable, Italy: “Obliged in the absence of a solution from the Region”

“The Mafia wanted waste management to be entrusted to landfills in this region for a long time, due to the substantial business connected to them. We pay the price. On our tormented island we now find ourselves without other waste treatment plants, the landfills are almost completely saturated and the disposal costs have tripled”.
Words full of bitterness are those with which the mayor of Syracuse, Francesco Italia, summarizes the state of the art of the waste issue, which even in the city could lead to a further increase in the Tari tariff. An eventuality that the mayor does not exclude. “We will be forced to further increase costs – declares Italy – if the regional government does not really realize that a solution must be given to this emergency”. Meanwhile, last week, during the days of the General States of Cinema in Syracuse, the president of the Region, Renato Schifani, confirmed to the mayor his intention to continue along the path of waste-to-energy plants. “Latest generation technologies – comments the mayor – with a controlled impact on the environment and with experiences throughout Europe and also in Italy. I am in favor – he reiterates – This will allow us to make a leap forward”.
In Syracuse, the municipal offices are reportedly working on the adaptation of the Tari, which in other words would mean an increase. The Urban Hygiene Office is completing the PEF (the economic and financial plan), which must be approved by April 30th if a national extension does not occur. The hypothesis of an increase in the cost of the TARI to be borne by citizens remains the most probable at the moment, although it would not be the only one. The costs of delivering unsorted waste have skyrocketed for Sicilian municipalities from just over 100 euros per tonne to almost 400. Anci Sicilia, through its president Paolo Amenta, continues to ask for different solutions. Schifani, for his part, assured the Region’s commitment to support the request presented by the national Anci and the intention to intervene in support of the Sicilian Municipalities with an extraordinary contribution to be included in the first available financial package.
The representatives of ANCI Sicily then highlighted that out of 391 municipalities on the island, 111 are in a state of failure or pre-failure. Hence, the need to establish a permanent table between the State, Region and Sicilian Municipalities to analyze the causes and prepare appropriate counteractions.
