PISTOIA – The Giostra dell’Orso Citizen Committee, in collaboration with the Municipality of Pistoia, has announced the competition for the creation of the banner for the Giostra dell’Orso 2024, which will go to the winning district of the event on the evening of Thursday 25 July.
This year the prize will have to be inspired by the Pistoia artist Marino Marini and his art. “This – we read in the notice – is to relaunch the Giostra outside the city walls on a national level, considering the value that is recognized in the intellectual legacy of this great artist”.
Terms and conditions of participation
The “rag” must measure from a minimum of 160 cm in height and 90 cm in width to a maximum of 180 cm in height and 110 cm in width, to be created with an indelible painting technique on fabric. The work, necessarily created vertically, must be accompanied by a support structure.
The proposed sketch must therefore be inspired by Marino Marini and contain the image of San Jacopo, the name of the City of Pistoia, the colors of the four districts, the year of the event, with reference to the horse race and the author’s signature.
Interested parties must submit the paper sketch in A3 format by Monday 20 May. Delivery is expected, by hand or by post, to the secretariat of the Councilor for Traditions (culture office) in via Sant’Andrea 16. Both in the case of hand delivery and shipping, the package must bear the words on the envelope in block letters “Sketch for the Palio 2024”.
The packages with the sketches of the cloth will be examined by a commission made up of eight members: the president of the Citizen Committee, the councilor for Traditions of the Municipality of Pistoia, the presidents of the Citizen Districts, two experts appointed by the Committee.
The outcome of the tender will be announced by May 30th. The artist, who guarantees the originality of his idea, will be paid a prize of one thousand euros.
The winner will have to deliver the finished work, which will become the property of the district that will win the 2024 Palio, by June 15th.
