The interview given to “Il Fatto Nisseno” by the Rector of the University of Palermo Massimo Midiri on the issue of the fourth polyclinic contributed to clarifying and extinguishing the recently raised controversies. For the Rector, not only “it is not correct to think and say that there will be the second one in Caltanissetta
Palermo Polyclinic or the fourth university center in Sicily” but he also added something that we have highlighted several times and that is that the polyclinic is not a “… a metaphysical structure that one activates at any moment without a prior process”.
The clinicalization of Sant’Elia
The Rector has therefore correctly illustrated what is about to be done, namely the start of the clinicalization of
some departments of the S. Elia hospital by the medical faculty of the University of Palermo.
In essence, the University of Palermo has decided to move away from the traditional model of the directly managed polyclinic, to also use the Nissena hospital structure. The clinicalization of hospitals responds to the same logic as the decentralization of university courses already implemented in the
90’s.
Reduce healthcare emigration
The objective is in fact to reduce the attractiveness of metropolitan areas, in which the majority of wealth indicators are concentrated, to the advantage of internal ones increasingly affected by
social and economic depopulation. Compared to this scenario, the Enna area has already proven to be a pioneer and far-sighted. Following the establishment, in the 1990s, of the University Consortium of Enna for the management of university courses decentralized from the Universities of Palermo and Catania (which represented the grafting embryo of the fourth university centre), today we are recording the “tentacular clinicalisation” in advanced phase of various Sicilian hospital structures by the medical faculty of Kore University. In the ASP of Enna alone, Kore has already introduced, through individual agreements, as many as 14 university professors, including full professors and researchers.
