Elections in Basilicata, Manfredonia (Acli): “Against abstentionism it is necessary to recreate a relationship of trust with voters”

“The significant decline in turnout in regional elections in Basilicata testifies to the disaffection of citizens towards a policy that is increasingly distant from the real needs of the country”. Emiliano ManfredoniaNational President of the Acli, thus comments on the turnout data relating to the regional elections in Basilicata which is 49.8% compared to 53, 52% in the previous elections in 2019.

“As Acli we believe that we must intervene on the involvement of citizens in the democratic life of the country, recreating a relationship of trust between voters and elected officials and focusing on the transparency of the parties. This is why we are working to launch a nationwide campaign with the dual objective of propose a reform of political parties, preparatory to a reform of the electoral law”, explains Manfredonia. “The question of the electoral law, and the method of selecting candidates, is necessarily linked to that of internal democracy within the parties, since it is not possible to overcome the problem of candidates of poor quality or representativeness of the territories if the methods of selection of party leadership groups”, continues Manfredonia.

“Voters, in addition to being disillusioned with work, public health, social security and protection against poverty, have a deep distrust of democratic institutions, as demonstrated by the data on voter turnout at all levels. But without participation in democratic processes there is a risk of ccreate even more inequalities. We therefore hope that our proposals can be accepted by the political forces and by all civil society that still believes in the values ​​of freedom and democracy enshrined in our Constitution”.
