ALESSANDRIA – A fitting remembrance, in Alessandria, in memory of Captain Giorgio Alessio, pilot of the Frecce Tricolori who died in a tragic accident.

It was promoted by the provincial coordination of the national association “Nastro Tricolore” Decorated with Civil Valor and the National Association of Fighters and Veterans in the spaces of the Volta technical institute of higher education in Alessandria, his hometown where he returned – as soon as he could – to visit to his parents, just as he then spent in the school he loved so much and where he graduated.

At just 17 years old Giorgio Alessio obtained his pilot’s license at the city’s Aereo Club. Model for many young people, he brought the colors of Italy to the sky. However, on a late summer Sunday 35 years ago, on August 28, 1988, he was the victim of a terrible accident.

At the US base in Ramstein, Germany, an air show called Airshow Flugtag was underway. The test of the Frecce Tricolori with the National Acrobatic Team was the most awaited, but it had an unfortunate epilogue, due to an error by one of the team members. Captain Alessio’s plane exploded upon impact on the ground, two other aircraft were involved: there were 67 victims and 346 spectators were injured.

At the remembrance ceremony at the Volta Institute, in addition to the local authorities, three officers from Cameri airport were present, including the commander Colonel Alessandro Pavesi and the fellow members of the Frecce Tricolori of the Patrol at the time.
