«Young people away from Calabria? Let it be a choice, not an inevitable destiny”
Descriptive text here

CATANZARO There Programmatic conference of the Democratic Party of Calabria, closes today in Soveria Mannelli. The alternative to the right, listening to the territories, discussion, sharing with the dem community to “change Calabria and restore hope to all of her children”. These are the themes relaunched by democratic men and women, gathered to also support the candidacy in the next European elections of Antonio Decaro. He also actively participates in the first programmatic conference of the Democratic Party of Calabria, «a southern land that is very similar to my region, Puglia, a land where unfortunately many people leave and where many people arrive driven by the migratory phenomenon».

The young arbiters of their destiny

A few jokes, then Decaro shifts attention to the electoral competition in which he is and will be the protagonist. «We must also invest through European funds in higher education, in work, to prevent young people from leaving. We don’t want to take away the possibility for our children to decide whether to go to study abroad or work far from their homeland, but it must be a choice and not an inevitable destiny., it shouldn’t be a condemnation.” The smile when Decaro talks about young people gives way to a grimace of disappointment when he enters with a straight leg rejecting – once again – differentiated autonomy. “It risks frustrating all the efforts we are making, from public works to improve living conditions to relaunching the economy and the social fabric of our communities. With differentiated autonomy we risk splitting the country.” Decaro does not spare a criticism of Prime Minister Meloni. «I listened to the President talk about differentiated autonomy and define it as an opportunity because it serves to make the ruling class of the South responsible. I am not irresponsible, I am the mayor of a city that has grown a lot in these ten years, it is a tourist destination, an area that hosts twenty-one Information Technology companies with 7,500 jobs. I don’t have to take responsibility, I need the resources to make up for these gaps which are above all territorial gaps.”

The message to Occhiuto

Yesterday, Francesco Boccia at the opening of the regional conference of the Democratic Party he sent a message to the governor of Calabria, Roberto Occhiuto. “Abandon Salvini on autonomy.” Antonio Decaro is also of the same opinion. «I saw that they are changing their minds, the problem is that the centre-right Calabrian parliamentarians voted for differentiated autonomy and it is a disaster for the South. If we leave the resources in the hands of the regions, not only will we not exceed the historical expenditure in the South, but we also risk falling behind the resources we have available today. This goes against the principles of the Constitution. Our Constitution says that regardless of where each of us is born or decides to live, we must have the same rights and therefore the same services. That’s not the case today.”

Thinking about Brussels

European elections often take on the contours of a national game, but the daily debate appears distant from the precarious balances of the member countries of the Union. Europe is at war, the post-war perspective should be a central point of this discussion. «For us in the Democratic Party, the values and ideals of the Ventotene manifesto must be at the center of the debate: values of brotherhood, solidarity, repudiation of war. Europe, together with all countries, must raise its voice, make its voice heard regarding the need for a truce, of an interruption to the conflict that we have a few kilometers away from us now”, says Decaro. Which he adds: «Europe is no longer a distant institutional entity, we feel that blue flag with golden stars closer. It is the same flag that allowed us to use the Pnrr funds and that in the South allows us to use the structural funds. It is the same flag that allowed us to have the same opportunities during the Covid and post-pandemic periods.” evidently important issues, but to citizens and voters «we must explain that there is a choice, or they vote for us and therefore for the policy that will allow us to continue to have relations with other European countries. Or you can continue to vote for the centre-right even in Europe which winks at Orbàn’s friends, at those thinking about Brexit, at those who repudiate the Euro”.
