Bari, degradation in the Isabella D’Aragona gardens

Degradation and neglect for one of the places in the heart of tourist Bari: for some time the Isabella D’Aragona gardens, a stone’s throw from the Castello Svevo, have not been doing well, amid situations that need to be restored or, in some cases, unusable for years. The Castle Park Committee reports the current conditions of the green area. The first element that catches the eye is the historic fountain in the center of the garden, broken for over 4 years. The monument, dating back to the 1930s, was in fact damaged at the end of 2019 due to the explosion of a paper bomb: “Since then it has been fenced off and unusable – the president of the Castle Park Committee, Andrea Guarnieri Calò Carducci, explains to BariToday -. An unacceptable state of abandonment”.

In the green area, however, there is no shortage of other critical issues and situations to improve: “The paving on the seafront side has practically disappeared. Unfortunately we notice that the garden maintenance trucks pass through there and the surface is now destroyed. Inside the paths Furthermore, almost all the baskets are broken or even non-existent.” Other problems, however, concern the trees: “Four holm oaks, dried up, were cut down a few years ago and never restored. Another fell a few days ago due to the wind. Lastly, we also point out a bent and risky lighting pole for public safety, being close to the pedestrian crossing of Piazza Massari”:

About 1 million euros was spent on the renovation of the garden. The interventions were completed in 2018: “The funds for the work – adds Guarnieri Calò Carducci – were also released thanks to the Committee. It was money allocated for other projects that would, in fact, no longer have been carried out. In the last days before of the tender deadline, the sums were diverted to this project, which was essentially ready but which was lying in the drawers of the municipal offices. We care particularly about the garden – underlines the president of the Committee – It is true that it is often crossed without it be careful but there are so many points that should have been managed better in five years, to keep it in the state it deserves after the redevelopment” concludes Guarnieri Calò Carducci.
