TARANTO – A counter-expertise to deny the increase in tumors in Taranto linked to the emissions of the former Ilva. The legal battle between the defense and the prosecution begins with a bang in the second degree trial “Sold-off environment” which yesterday celebrated its first hearing before the assize court of appeal presided over by judge Antonio Del Coco and subsequently Ugo Bassi.
After the constitution of the parties, news arrived of the filing on 3 April of a technical note signed by the epidemiologist consultants Francesco Saverio Violante, university professor and director of the School of Specialization in Occupational Medicine in Bologna, who together with Marco Novelli signed a report on behalf of the Riva defense to highlight the errors contained in the epidemiological report which started the investigation which led to the seizure of the hot area plants in 2012.
According to Violante, the epidemiologists appointed at the time by investigating judge Patrizia Todisco to conduct the analysis on a cohort made up of approximately 300 thousand citizens residing in Taranto, Statte, and Massafra and evaluate, statistically, the presence of a correlation between exposure to industrial emissions and any harmful effects on the health of the subjects of the cohort in terms of acute and chronic effects, they worked on a series of incorrect data. To draw up that report, the experts acquired the personal data of the citizens in the period between January 1998 and December 2008 and correlated them with the data obtained from the health company relating to mortality, hospitalizations which occurred in the same period and finally with data relating to exposure to pollutants.
