Sicily, as mentioned, struggles on most indicators. According to the technicians ofNational Institute of Statistics, it is among the last regions for healthy life expectancy at birth. The estimate stops at 56.3 years, in a ranking dominated by Bolzano (66.5 years), Trent (64.2), Valle d’Aosta (64) e Tuscany (62.5). Instead they are in the queue Basilicata (52.8 years), Molise (54.9) e Calabria (55.4). The Italian average is 59.2 points. Istat specifies that the data – like those of the life expectancy at birth and of unlimited life expectancy after the age of 65 – are still temporary. Also on the mental health Sicily is not good. The rate calculated by Istat is 68.3 points, the third lowest in Italy on a par with theAbruzzo. The best data is recorded at Bolzano (73.2 points), Trentino Alto Adige (72.5), Trent (71.8) e Sardinia (71.4). The lowest data are those of Marche and Molise (68 points) and of Piedmont and Umbria (68.1). The Italian average is 68.7 points. A value which, the authors of the report underline, is worse than the pre-pandemic period.

Avoidable mortality above average

As for the avoidable mortality, that is, those cases in which death “could have been avoided
thanks to atimely healthcare and effective, which includes secondary prevention and treatments”, the rate in Sicily (updated to 2021) is 22 cases per 10 thousand inhabitants. Once again it is among the highest in Italy, second only to Molise (23,2) e Campania (25). The lowest rates are those of Trentino-Alto Adige, Bolzano and Trento (all at 15.1), Veneto (16,2) e Tuscany (17). The national rate is 19.2 cases per 10 thousand inhabitants, and records “a significant increase, in contrast with the long-term reduction observed throughout period 2005-2019, which has certainly been affected by the mortality attributable to Covid.” In short, the pandemic took its toll. Also on the child mortality (2021 data) the news is not good. In Sicily the rate is 3.9 deaths per thousand live births, second only to that of Calabria (4,2). The lowest figures are recorded in Umbria (1,2), Tuscany (1,6) e Bolzano (1.7). The national rate is 2.6 deaths each thousand live births.

Risky habits for citizens

The report provides other parameters for evaluating the health rate in the Italian regions. Finally, some data is provided on lifestyle habits that are risky for health (data updated 2023). On thealcohol, as mentioned, Sicily is the best region in Italy. This is a happy exception, because the other parameters are negative, sinceexcess weight (49.1 points vs. 44.6) al smoke (21.6 vs. 19.9) at sedentary lifestyle (52.5 vs. 34.2). As for theadequate nutrition, the rate in Sicily is 10.1 points, compared to 16.5 nationally.
