In Sicily in October perhaps we will vote for the Provinces

There is a date, albeit indicative, the month is October 2024 for the second level elections of the provinces. The era of the commissioners of the Free Consortia ends. Law then wanted by Rosario Crocetta’s government, it was 2013.

The text approved by the council introduces the discipline of the former Provinces, until the approval of the awaited national law for the reform of large area bodies for the introduction of direct universal suffrage election of bodies. In compliance with the ruling of the Constitutional Court last July, in fact, the regional government plans to call second-level elections for the presidents of the free municipal consortia and metropolitan councils on one of the Sundays between 6 and 27 October 2024.

The extraordinary commissioners appointed by the region, therefore, will remain in office only until the creation of the new bodies.
The text of the government bill will now be sent to the Ars for discussion and final approval.
The centre-right parties would have preferred the first level election, with the citizens voting, but the Court ruling and the too many years of commissionership, almost 11, require a certain speed.

The national government, in fact, must first repeal the Delrio law and then move on to the first level elections. In the meantime, mayors and city councilors will participate in the vote, just as mayors and city councilors will be eligible to be elected as provincial councilors. in charge. If the municipal office ceases, the provincial office also ceases. The president will, however, be elected from among the mayors of the province, whose mandate expires no earlier than eighteen months from the date of the elections.

This also stops further electoral appetites of the many who would have liked to run an electoral campaign for the Provinces.
In the province of Trapani, if the second level elections are confirmed in October, the outgoing mayor of Marsala, Massimo Grillo, will not be able to be elected president of the province, as he will be less than 18 months away from the local elections. The Local Authorities bill, not yet addressed at the ARS, however, seems to postpone the Marsala administrative elections from October 2025 to May 2026.
