There are 149 former students of the Liceo Classico Galileo in Florence who will return to school on May 14th to tackle the Latin version.

The numbers of the event, unique in the national territory, were presented by the ‘Amici del Galileo’ association in collaboration with the head teacher of the Florentine classical high school, Dr. Liliana Gilli.

The appointment has been set for May 14th at 4.30pm. There were 143 participants, 89 women and 60 men. 43 chose to take the competitive test with evaluation and final ranking of merit, while for 106 there will be a non-competitive test: correction of the version, no grade, but mentions in the opinion of the examining commission. Among the participants there is also a priest, while the older one who will present himself to translate faced ‘his’ maturity in 1960. The most represented section is E, while it is mainly the ‘kids’ of the 80s who have chosen to return to class. Several students of the 2021 high school diploma will also participate in the initiative of the Florentine high school. There was no written assignment for them in person due to the pandemic.

Two hours to deliver the translation. On the desk there can only be the dictionary accompanied by two foolscap sheets formally stamped by the school, and a black pen. The examining commission is of the highest level, composed of the Galileo professors, together with the president of the Florentine delegation of the Italian Association of Classical Culture, professor Maria Pace Pieri and the professor of Greek language and literature of the University of Florence, Enrico Magnelli, former student proper to Galileo. The awards will be presented in October, the commemorative medal was created by the Florentine goldsmith master Paolo Penko. It represents the classic entrance door of the school that welcomed generations of high school students.

“Rimaturity – said Liliana Gilli – represents a meeting between students; those of yesterday with those of today who proudly wanted to participate in the initiative. A bridge between generations, which will allow adults to return to the classrooms in which they grew up, and young people to understand what the added value of our school is: building community. But our event is also an invitation to the students of the future. We want to present the educational capacity of the Liceo Galileo and of a course, the classic humanistic one, which has been able to adapt to today’s times and which today more than ever is able to prepare our young people for the challenges they will face for their future”.
