Siena Police Headquarters, naming the Hall of Honor of the Piave barracks

The naming ceremony of the Hall of Honor of the Piave barracks of the Siena Police Headquarters was held this morning, Thursday 18 April, after Raniero Virgilio, Marshal of Public Security and Giambattista Carloni, Guard of Public Security, fallen in service, Silver Medals to military valor, in the presence of the deputy general director of Public Security – central director for the Criminal Police, prefect Raffaele Grassi.

At the ceremony at the Piave barracks of the Siena Police Headquarters, in addition to the vicar vice-prefect of Siena Imma Amalfitano, the police commissioner Pietro Milone and the mayor of Abbadia San Salvatore Fabrizio Tondi, the highest civil, religious and military authorities of the Siena province were present.

The two fallen, members of a contingent of policemen engaged in Abbadia San Salvatore during the riots resulting from the attack on Palmiro Togliatti in July 1948, were attacked by some rioters who seriously injured guard Carloni during a firefight; Marshal Virgilio, who worked to help his colleague, was attacked and stabbed to death by some demonstrators near the nearby hospital.

During the ceremony, after the speeches of the Police Commissioner and the relatives of Raniero and Giambattista, Deputy Chief of Police Grassi took the floor and, in his speech, underlined the importance of remembrance, which gives solemnity to the stories and lives of Giambattista and Raniero, two brave policemen.

“Their names, now present on the dedication plaque – recalled Deputy Chief Grassi -, honor their sense of duty, their discipline and their sense of the State. Through the commemoration, an inseparable bond is formed between the natural families of the two agents and that of the State Police. The hope – concluded the deputy head of the State Police Raffaele Grassi – is that young people, reading their names, absorb the highest values ​​of the human being condensed by the example of the two policemen, who invite us to continue on the path their path.”

After the unveiling of the plaque at the Piave barracks of the Siena Police Headquarters, the chaplain of the State Police imparted the blessing and the ceremony ended with the required silence.
