Save an “owl” and an “oriental collared dove”
Maida, in the hamlet of Carrà, the Carabinieri rescued an “owl”, a nocturnal bird of prey, and an “oriental collared dove”, both birds belonging to “protected species”.
The small specimens, in obvious difficulty, found it difficult to fly, as they had one of their wings broken, and were at the edge of the road risking being hit by passing cars.
The Carabinieri, on patrol duty, having noticed the presence of the birds in difficulty, stopped and gave them first aid. Subsequently, the owl and the turtle dove, with the collaboration of the Forestry Carabinieri of the Lamezia Terme nucleus, were entrusted to the CRAS Wild Animal Recovery Center in Catanzaro, where they will be cared for and observed until they are healed and ready to stand out again flight.
Today’s episode, in addition to confirming the constant presence of the Army’s patrols in the area, further underlines its great sensitivity to wildlife and environmental issues, highlighting, among other things, the cooperation between the various branches of the Institution.

The owl is a nocturnal bird of prey from the Strigidae family, it is about 23 cm long, has a wingspan of about 55 cm and a weight that varies from 100 to just over 200 grams. It has stocky shapes, a wide and flattened head without the ear tufts typical of the owl, yellow eyes and long legs partially covered with bristles. The upper part is grey-brown spotted with white, while the lower part is predominantly white, spotted with brown.
The collared dove or oriental dove is a bird of the Columbidae family, native to Asia, but which had a strong expansion in Europe in the 20th century. The average size is 32 cm in length and 180 grams in weight. Its color is grey-red or caffe latte, slightly darker on the back. A narrow black collar stands out on the neck. Slender in shape than the domestic pigeon, it is very similar to the wild dove. The sexes look similar, but the males are larger.
