Venice, the ticket reveals 20 thousand “invisibles”. And the media starts saying «It’s true that…»

Between fifteen thousand and twenty thousand inhabitants, who however are not resistant in Venice. Someone has signed rental agreements and mostly it would be workersothers are students. There are those here who also have a temporary general practitioner and those who have registered on the house arrest list in the Registry. The data, still partial, would confirm the thesis that in the historic center there are not only the official 49 thousand inhabitants but that, for various reasons, there is a small army of “invisibles” that they live in Venice every day and that would bring the number of residents to above 60 thousand. Data that Veritas had already estimated in its statistics on water consumption and which would now be confirmed in the requests for exemption from the access ticket.

The numbers

To date, approximately 103 thousand QR codes have been issued: 23 thousand to excursion tourists, approximately 40 thousand to visitors who have booked hotels, B&Bs or short-term rental apartments, 15 thousand are from Veneto and 6 thousand are students. The remainder (excluding the share of second home owners) could be identified with the bureaucratic term “equivalent residents”, i.e. people who live in the city without a formal title: there they work, sleep, shop and frequent clubs, restaurants, cinemas and theatres. The numbers could grow over the next nine days in view of the entry into force of the access fee on April 25th. At Ca’ Farsetti there is the certainty that there will be a last-minute rush to get in order for the twenty-nine days – nine consecutive from Thursday 25th to Sunday 5th May, then the QR code will be available every weekend until 14th July, excluding the long weekend of June 2nd – in which the obligation to book a visit to the city will be tested for the first time. And in the case of Italian and foreign daytrippers to pay 5 euros into the municipal coffers.

The communication campaign

The official communication campaign for the measure also started yesterday, the slogan of which (claim to put it as Mayor Luigi Brugnaro announced at the beginning of the month in Rome) is in Venetian: “But it’s true that…”. Followed, this is the case of the publication on Corriere della Sera yesterday, from the question «Is Venice a wonder not to be missed? Yes, but we need to protect it.” And the access fee, in the administration’s objectives, has this purpose. «Protect this unique city of its kind is necessary – we read -. This is why the experimentation of the access contribution was introduced, a tool that aims to bring balance and guarantee everyone the best experience in the city.” A QR code then takes you directly to the cda.ve.it portal.

The opposites

Statements that do not convince a slice of the city (starting from the minority in the city council) which opposes the introduction of the ticket and is already predicting protests on the “x” day in which the contribution will come into force. Two days earlier, on the 23rd in the San Leonardo room, atown meeting promoted by the civic body The whole city together, by the Forum for Mestre and Venice, by the Damages from nightlife and No large ships committees and by the Social Assembly for the home. A few days ago, a signature collection was also launched online under the motto “Free Venice from ticket”: website and social pages on Facebook and Instagram against «Venice Disneyland». “If you, like us, believe that Venice should not be transformed into an uninhabited amusement park with an entrance ticket for mass tourism – we read – then sign our manifesto”. At the moment, subscriptions have reached 470.
