The importance of dialect in the 21st century. Vincenzo Bochicchio’s book presented in Potenza

The University of Basilicata, the International Center of Dialectology and the Appennino Foundation together in the Auditorium of the parish of Santa Cecilia in Potenza for the presentation of Vicenzo Bochicchio’s book ‘A SSE NO’…, which took place last weekend .

The launch of the interesting volume in Aviglianese dialect was the starting point for a detailed round table on the importance of local dialects and traditions, in which, in addition to the author, the director of the Appennino Foundation Piero Lacorazza and the director of the International Center of Dialectology, Prof. Patrizia Del Puente. Del Puente underlined not only the importance but the need, in an increasingly globalized contemporary world, to preserve the knowledge of dialects also and above all in the new generations.

During the debate it emerged that dialects are a cultural tool that tells the history and roots of a people, therefore representing the identity card of a culture that must be safeguarded. In this sense, books, poetry, songs and theatrical performances are an indispensable viaticum to allow younger people not to lose a cultural heritage that is increasingly penalized by an indiscriminate globalization that even compresses the Italian language itself to the advantage of the so-called international languages. Dialect is therefore the means that identifies the past and its origins and it is important to teach it to your children so that they can themselves participate in the popular culture from which they come. A precious asset that tells the story and birth of different regional realities, fueling curiosity and a desire to know. Finally, to animate the presentation, coordinated by Franco Sabia of the “Terra di Racconti” Association, were the poet and writer Mario Santoro and the musician Pietro Santarsiero who performed Avigliano songs.
