He was in Cagliari for a sporting event and felt ill while playing: taken to hospital he was urgently admitted for type B meningitis. A 20-year-old boy from Olbia is currently in the Santissima Trinità hospital in Cagliari.

It is serious but his condition is stable and slowly improving. The athlete was taken to hospital on Sunday when he fell ill during the match.

He was admitted to the intensive care unit and in the evening due to worsening he was transferred for some tests to the Brotzu hospital in Cagliari. Fortunately his clinical picture has recovered and already last night he returned to Santissima Trinità where he is kept under constant observation.

LThe Cagliari Local Health Authority and the Gallura Local Health Authority have started investigations to reconstruct the young man’s contacts, understand where he contracted meningitis, and start prophylaxis. “The Hygiene and Public Health service of the Gallura Local Health Authority – they say – promptly started the epidemiological investigation with the search for the boy’s close contacts, the prophylaxis of family members and acquaintances and health surveillance, also informing and collaborating with the Local Health Authorities of the territories frequented by the young man in the last few days. At the moment the subjects subjected to prophylaxis in Northern Sardinia are around thirty”.

The position of the Cagliari Local Health Authority is similar, which has initiated “all preventive prophylactic measures against close contacts” of the young man.
