Urban Center packed for the conference “The longevity diet, iodine and thyroid”. The event was organized by the 50&Più La Spezia association which periodically promotes courses, trips, initiatives and conferences aimed in particular at the elderly.

“The objective of the association is in fact to provide elderly people with the tools to increase their skills and to always be informed and in step with the times – we read in a note -. Professor Maurizio Gasperi, endocrinologist, explored the topic of iodine and its link with the thyroid, in particular underlining the importance of the law which made the use of iodized salt semi-mandatory.

“Thanks to this law – explained the professor – an extraordinary path has been started which has allowed the resolution of a problem that has afflicted Italy for millennia, namely the lack of iodine in the diet. The use of this ingredient in the preparation of foods intended for large-scale distribution has led the country to have an adequate presence of iodine, which over time will lead to a drastic reduction in the prevalence of goiter.”

The conference also aimed to highlight how essential a balanced diet is to staying fit over time. The nutritionist biologist Eleonora Martini spoke about the Blue Zones, i.e. those geographical areas where the average human lifespan is significantly longer than in the rest of the world. Precisely based on this research, the doctor has exposed some good habits to promote continuous well-being up to old age.

“In general, from a preventive perspective aimed at promoting longevity – states Dr. Martini – a fundamental piece of advice is to avoid the consumption of sugars and prefer wholemeal products to always be combined with a source of vegetables and proteins, especially legumes, fish and good quality white meat, nuts, seeds and olive oil are also essential.”

The conference was attended by the regional president and national vice-president of 50&Più Brigida Gallinaro, the president of 50&Più La Spezia Giorgio Molinari and the councilors of the La Spezia association, specifically reaching La Spezia. The note concludes: “The 50&Più La Spezia association thanks the Municipal Administration for the concession of the hall, the secretariat and the staff of the Civic Theater who contributed to the realization of the event”.
