A large study published in ‘BMJ Medicine’ suggests that regular use of fish oil supplements, rich in Omega 3, can have mixed effects on cardiovascular health. The supplements could increase the risk of heart disease and stroke in people with good cardiovascular health (+13% risk of atrial fibrillation and +5% risk of stroke). However, for those who already have cardiovascular problems, these supplements can slow the progression of the disease and reduce the risk of death (-15% risk of heart attack and -9% risk of death from heart failure). The study, which tracked 415,737 participants for nearly 12 years, highlights the need for further research to clarify these findings and better understand the mechanisms underlying the effects offish oil.
