With the arrival of spring, Italy is approaching the beach season with great strides. Especially during the weekends, the climate is already ideal for spending a day by the sea. Some cities and regions have already set the dates for the opening of beach establishments, so that you can enjoy the sea even on equipped beaches. Discover then, when beach establishments open in Italy in 2024.

Who decides the opening dates of the bathing establishments?

The decision on when beach clubs can open varies from region to region, influenced by climatic factors, local and regional administrative assessments, and regulatory changes. Every year, the competent authorities evaluate the weather conditions and current regulations to establish the most appropriate time for the start of the bathing season.

Anyway the opening of the factories normally takes place by May 1st of each year, as reported by state legislation. However, in some regions, the weather allows the opening even a few weeks earlier and the regions can anticipate the long-awaited green light: here’s why the calendar is uneven at a national level.

The opening dates for each region

The singulars weather variations this year have delayed, in some cases, the opening of beaches on Italian beaches. From May 1st, in general, all the seaside resorts are already active but – in some areas – it has been possible to use sunbeds and umbrellas since the beginning of April. In particular:

  • Liguria: the official opening is for the first day of May, but already on April 25th 60% of the factories were active.
  • Puglia: compulsory opening runs from June 1st to the second Sunday of September, but it is also possible to open in other periods of May and September.
  • Tuscany: the situation depends from city to city. While in some places we have been working since Easter, for other countries we will have to wait until the canonical 1st of May.
  • Lazio: on the Roman coast you will have to wait for the May Day holiday to use the services of the beaches.
  • Emilia Romagna: the bathing season, i.e. the period in which the relevant checks are carried out, will start on May 25th. Naturally, even in this case the municipalities can propose different periods and times.

Not only the sea but also events

On many of the Italian beaches, beach clubs also organize beach events and parties. Many beaches also remain open in the evening, often organizing dinners on the beach, live music events or DJ sets, bringing their respective seaside resorts to life.

During the day, then, they are often organized sport events using facilities such as tennis courts, beach soccer or beach volleyball. So, in general, May 1st is the date that – weather permitting – will mark the opening of almost all beaches in Italy, which will be operational until late September. Or, if autumn is particularly hot, even until October.
