Coronavirus- pandemic and social implications is the new book by Marcello Scarpa. As can be seen from the title, the author deals with an extremely current topic: Covid 19, or the pandemic that has overwhelmed the entire globe in the space of a few months. Nor the red areas or the border closures they were able to stop the spread of the disease, which soon proved lethal. In this situation, all of humanity found itself exposed to a scourge that highlighted all its fragility and inability to combat the contagion with adequate measures.

This precious 100-page volume consists of two sections. The first summarizes the scientific-health characteristics of the pandemic; the second focuses on the psycho-social consequences of the disease. After analyzing the origins, scientific name, causes of the infection and its consequences, the pharmaceutical subsidies that have gradually been adopted to deal with the disease are indicated. Furthermore, the methods of transmission, contagion, symptoms, R0 factor, etc. of the virus were stated. Also interesting are the statistics provided in the text concerning the affected population, and the relative comparison with the data concerning the people who died in the Second World War (Covid March-April in Lombardy: 11500-contra Second World War: 2000); the percentage of those who fell ill based on age and sex, etc.

The concern that emerges throughout the work testifies that not only the strictly pharmaceutical issue is addressed but also the more exquisitely ethical-moral one. The concerns that ordinary people have had to face when in contact with health emergencies and authoritative decisions that the various government measures have adopted are taken to heart.

Subjective rights and legitimate interests were put to the test in this emergency as in one theatrical piece in which everyone had to do their part, without losing either dignity or relative freedom.

The question that arises at the conclusion of the work is: “There is still a future on our planet After this kind of virus?”…

Along the lines of this discussion, some of the pandemics that have occurred throughout history come to light (from the Black Death of the Middle Ages to today’s COVID-19).

Will we be able to learn from the lessons of the past in the future, or will everything soon be forgotten?…

The writing of the book follows a daily trend, in a present that we could define historicalwhich repeats itself in a Vico way.

Years 2019-2023 constitute the start and end dates of the pandemic emergency. From now on the term pandemic will disappear to make room for the normal classifications of contagious diseases.

However, the author is keen to highlight that it must be maintained high the guard, as science demands, as new variants will appear on the horizon. This testifies to the inevitable relevance of this booklet.
