the city with the circle-shaped houses — idealista/news

Brøndby Haveby, located on the outskirts of Copenhagen, Denmark, represents an incredible fusion of urbanization and nature, offering a revolutionary perspective on sustainable living. Also known circular city, shows its peculiarity from above: a block is not rectangular or square but in the shape of a circle. Here is the project behind this structure.

The particular history of Brøndby Haveby

This village is certainly not recent: its history is centuries old. However, starting from the 1950s, the need was felt to adapt the city plan to the needs of the economic boom. Here, therefore, the landscape architect Erik Mygind decided to follow the ideas of Carl Theodor Sørensen, who imagined spaces in which urbanization could coexist in perfect harmony with the surrounding greenery.

The creation of Brøndby Haveby was based on a simple but revolutionary concept: create a community that could live in symbiosis with nature, albeit with all the comforts. In particular, the creators of this city thought of recreating the atmosphere of ancient villages, where everyone gathered around the fire for moments of conviviality.

The characteristics of the houses in Brøndby Haveby

One of the most fascinating peculiarities of Brøndby Haveby, Denmark’s circle city, is undoubtedly its urban structure. The houses are arranged in approx 24 circleseach of which hosts approx 12 homes. Interspersing the homes are approximately 284 gardens with hedges that act as walls.

Every home can count on a garden, a car park and above all on a common courtyard between all the houses on the block, in order to revive the old idea of people sharing moments of relaxation in front of the fire. Due to this particular shape, the houses are not so spacious, as they measure maximum 50 square meters. This is not a serious problem, given that many houses are only inhabited in the summer.
