Metro In Rome, what the redevelopment project consists of and when the works will be completed — idealista/news
Descriptive text here

There Metro A in Rome is the protagonist of one retraining which aims to modernize the infrastructure. The work program includes restyling of the first three stations (Spain, Cyprus and Octavian), the renewal of the tracks and the extraordinary maintenance of translation systems. Construction will be completed by 8 December 2024, in time for the Jubilee.

The deep restyling which will lead to having all the 27 stations of Metro A in Rome completely renovated was planned thanks to the allocation of 55 million euros of Jubilee Funds, partly with the Project Financing tool and partly through the direct management of Atac. The Project Financing provides for a public contribution of 9.8 million euros, with the remaining 45.2 million Atac has invested 5 million for the renewal and extraordinary maintenance of the translation systems and 40.2 million will be invested for the restructuring of the 23 stations on the MA Line.

Presenting the works, the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, underlined: “Our work of recovery and redevelopment of the subways continues with the restyling of the first three stations of the A metro, Spagna, Cipro and Ottaviano, which today are very old and not very decorous. In parallel, work will be done on the transfer systems, on the connection to San Giovanni between lines A and C, and the escalators of the Piazza Vittorio station will be rebuilt. Finally, the last phase of replacing the tracks, which are 30 years old, will be carried out to ensure safety and support a greater number of trains. From December of this year the new trains will begin to arrive which will allow us to increase the frequencies on lines A and B. Interventions necessary to make our subways modern and welcoming”.

The Mobility Councilor, Eugenio Patanè, then added: “The works we presented today are part of the overall program of interventions necessary for the redevelopment of public transport, especially at an infrastructural level and on the most important assets. Because the great work that we have been carrying out since the beginning of the recommendation to increase the quality and quantity of LPT must necessarily be accompanied by that on the modernization of the infrastructures, starting with the stations which must become increasingly beautiful, functional, modern and accessible to all”.

Metro A in Rome, what the works consist of

As explained by a note from Roma Capitale, the transformation of Rome’s Metro A was necessary to address the significant increase in demand for transport on the line expected precisely on the occasion of the start of the Jubilee.

For what concern track renewal, on Monday 8 April the night construction site for the replacement of the tracks along the line was reopened, resulting in the return of the evening closures of Metro A, with the last run at 9pm, from Sunday to Thursday, with regular service hours until 1.30am on Friday and Saturday. On the days of early closing, a replacement service will be activated, for which 76 shuttle buses will be used which will stop on the surface at the closed stations.

As regards the restyling of the stationsthe first to be affected by the redevelopment works are Spagna, Ottaviano and Cipro, which will be completed during 2024. To allow for the most invasive interventions, it will be necessary to provide for a closure period of the stations in Spagna, from 15 July to 3 October and Ottaviano from 22 July to 9 September 2024. The Cipro station, also affected by infrastructure renewal works in the summer period, will remain open with only limited access in some areas.

Finally, regarding the extraordinary maintenance of translation systems, extraordinary maintenance activities will be carried out on 105 translation systems, including the replacement of 22 stairlifts. The intervention plan requires the closure of Vittorio Emanuele station from 8 April until 30 June. All other maintenance and replacement interventions on the translation systems along line A are expected to be carried out during the normal course of the service.

The restyling of the Spagna station

Bottino alley entrance:

  • Installation of a green wall at the entrance facade to improve the spatial quality, not only of the entrance to the Metro, but of the entire alley and mitigate the concentration of atmospheric particulate matter (PM10). The tree species used guarantee a high anti-smog capacity and absorption of dust present in the atmosphere.
  • Pre-assembled modules, with earth and tree essences, which allow rapid installation, with less expensive and less frequent maintenance.
  • Integrated irrigation system, adjusted according to real needs, in order to ensure wetting of the green wall.

Bottino alley corridor:

  • Mirrored false ceiling to amplify the entrance spaces, reflect the light and provide a better immersive sensation.
  • Replacement of cable duct covers in passage areas with design elements to give greater sinuosity to the elements and which, through the new lights, are perceived as softer and less impactful.

Platform access mezzanine:

  • The mezzanine of Spagna station will be characterized by the presence of RGB (Red, Green, Blue) LED lights. A notable leap forward in light source technology, allowing station environments to be enlivened with accents of colored light. You can then program the colors for special events or specific initiatives.

The restyling of the Spagna Cipro and Ottaviano stations: “dynamic white” lighting, the new layout and new furnishings

In the stations of Spagna Cipro and Ottaviano a “dynamic white” lighting system. The solution simulates natural daylight and adapts to travelers’ personal and environmental needs. The system can reproduce the color levels of sunlight throughout the day, such as warmer light in the morning and cooler light at midday.

The advantages are:

  • greater environmental comfort for travelers in transit (greater perceptual effectiveness during station cleaning and maintenance and greater perception of color spectrums compatible with the retina and at the neuronal level);
  • adequate level of compatibility between natural and artificial light also based on different time slots and weather conditions.

In the stations of Spagna Cipro and Ottaviano a service is also planned re-design of the signage system, in the environments and on the recurring technological elements, to give greater effectiveness and contemporaneity. The new layout, designed after a careful analysis of the entry and exit flows of passengers on the mezzanine and on the platform, redistributes the information by applying the Atac signage system for the stations and allows the production and control of the information, obtaining maximum coherence perceptive and avoid the proliferation and/or overlap of further languages. The applied model allows you to predict and select information by organizing it in such a way as to transmit it to users in the right quality and quantity and improve the readability of the texts.

The design of new furnishings in all stations it was carried out to improve the experience of use with ergonomic shapes. The design allows for better integration into the subway spaces offering a better perception. Replacement of seats, baskets and newspaper holders is expected. In the Spagna and Ottaviano stations, a new flooring system at the forefront of technology and design, made of PVC modules that can be customized in size, color and texture. The flooring system demonstrates excellent adhesion and excellent wear resistance considering the continuous traffic of flows of people and heavy vehicles. The design of the new textures is aimed at increasing the flow capacity of water particles on the surface, making the flooring system highly resistant to slipping, with easy cleaning and quicker drying properties. The surfaces conceived in this way are also more elastic and shock-absorbing.
