Do you sell regularly on Vinted? You risk a heavy fine: never exceed this limit

With the entry into force of the DAC7 directive, tax checks are triggered on those who usually sell on Vinted: here’s what changes for private individuals and online professionals

With the growing diffusion of online sales platforms such as Vintedmore and more Italians have started emptying closets and cellars, transforming unused objects into extra income. However, the continuous and professional use of these platforms may constitute a commercial activity and, consequently, be subject to tax obligations and sanctions. The entry into force of the European directive DAC7 has strengthened controls on fiscal transparency in the digital economy, imposing precise limits and communication obligations between digital platforms and the Revenue Agency.

It is not forbidden to sell on Vintednor use the platform to free up space at home or to earn money by selling used items. However, Italian and European legislation distinguishes between occasional sales and commercial activities. The substantial difference lies in the frequency of sales and the size of the earnings.

Selling on Vinted: when you risk sanctions

Anyone who uses Vinted professionallyby purchasing and reselling products for profit, perhaps even sponsoring offers on social media, is configured as a real virtual shop. In this case, tax legislation requires the opening of a VAT number and the declaration of all revenues. Anyone who does not respect these rules risks heavy fines and investigations by the Revenue Agency.

According to the provisions of the DAC7 directive, implemented in Italy, platforms such as Vinted, eBay, Etsy e Amazon Marketplace are obliged to communicate to the Revenue Agency the data of sellers who exceed specific annual limits:

  • over 30 sales in a calendar year;
  • earnings exceeding 2,000 euros per year.

Exceeding these thresholds does not automatically entail sanctions, but activates a tax control mechanism aimed at verifying whether the activity is considered commercial and therefore subject to taxation. It is a system that aims to combat illegal activity and illegal sales, phenomena that can damage the legal economy.

Mandatory communications concern not only the sale of second-hand goods, but also platforms that offer short-term rental services (Airbnb, Booking), freelance services (Fiverr, TaskRabbit), rental of vehicles such as bike sharing or car sharing, and other forms of digital intermediation.

Those who must pay particular attention are therefore:

  • private individuals who routinely sell used clothing or other goods on Vinted;
  • users who market collectibles on eBay;
  • artisans and creators who use Etsy to sell handmade products;
  • freelancers and professionals who offer services through digital platforms;
  • hosts who manage short-term rentals, required to comply with specific tax regimes.

A private individual who sells occasionally does not have to change anything in his habits or worry about opening a VAT number, as long as the sales do not exceed the established limits. On the contrary, those who sell regularly and in an organized way must consider opening a VAT number and fulfilling all the tax obligations required for businesses.

In particular:

  • those who usually sell generate a business income and must open a VAT number;
  • businesses and VAT number holders must maintain correct and updated tax documentation;
  • professionals who work as freelancers must declare the proceeds as self-employment income;
  • hosts of short-term rentals can opt for flat rate tax or a subsidized flat-rate regime with VAT number.

In the online sales landscape, Vinted stands out for a series of services aimed at guaranteeing the security of transactions and the protection of users. In fact, the platform offers:

  • the Purchase protectionwhich ensures a refund in the event of loss or damage to the goods during shipping, or if the item does not correspond to the description;
  • a verification system for designer fashion items and electronics, with authenticity and functionality checks;
  • prepaid labels for shipping, paid by the buyer, to simplify the sales process.

These tools help make the Vinted experience safer and more reliable, encouraging the growth of a solid and active community in Italy and numerous European countries.
